Position Description

Reporting to the Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Manager and serving as an active member of our SHE team at our Gaston, SC (Columbia, SC) facility, some of the responsibilities of the Safety Specialist will be accomplished through the following tasks:

  • Review plans for construction of new equipment
  • Keep current with safety policies, regulations and industrial processes
  • Review safety programs to determine their adequacy/effectiveness
  • Knowledgeable of CSE 1st checks and rescue setup – site resource
  • Able to learn the site’s badging system
  • Audit key site safety programs
  • Evaluate CSE rescue plans and make recommendations
  • Training topics include confined space, LTCT, Barricade, Fall Protection, ACC/FCC, Hands-on Fire Extinguisher training, New Hire Orientation and other key programs
  • Able coordinate and lead loss prevention and other regulatory safety inspections
  • Responsible for the site’s security program
  • Responsible tracking of all site training
  • Able to prepare, coordinate and deliver safety training
  • Lead various site safety teams
  • Support the site during startups, shutdowns, and during periods of construction
  • Inspect facilities, equipment, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
  • Additional safety initiatives as needed
  • General understanding of fire protection systems
  • Update site procedures/programs as they come due
  • Participate in site inspections/audits

Job Requirements:

  • Able to interface with all types of people (internal and external)
  • Must be proficient with Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Must be able to follow instructions
  • 3-5 years of experience in a safety role
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and accident investigation methodology
  • BA or BS degree in Safety, Loss Prevention, Occupational Safety or equivalent
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must be detail oriented and self-driven
  • Organization and tidiness are critical skills
  • Effective oral, presentation and written communication skills; listens and gets clarification.
