ABOUT FPD

First Presbyterian Day School (FPD) is a 3K-12th grade Christ centered, college preparatory independent school located in Macon, Georgia which exists to educate and equip children to change the world for God’s glory.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Safety Officer manages all aspects of our efforts to ensure that visitors, staff, and students are safe and secure while on the school campus and to protect school assets and property, partnering and collaborating with appropriate school divisions and personnel. The Safety Officer will develop, implement, and oversee all safety and security functions and procedures, anticipate and identify risks and threats, including accident prevention, and respond accordingly to achieve the mission, vision, and strategies of the school.

The Safety Officer is responsible to:

Campus Safety and Emergency Management

  • Coordinate with safety inspectors (e.g., fire, building, elevator) to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal mandates and reporting.
  • Plan and execute a communication strategy for campus constituents including; best practice outreach program, educational communications, training, and customer surveys.
  • Ensure compliance with operational procedures as they relate to guarding and patrolling physical property.
  • Establish procedures for preventing and mitigating vandalism.
  • Monitor safety issues and procedures for pick-up and drop-off of students.
  • Direction and guidance of students after being released from school.
  • Lead the effort to plan, schedule, train, conduct, measure and review campus safety drills including fire, lockdown and enhanced security, active shooter, and severe weather.
  • Oversee security response to suspicious activity.
  • Monitor severe weather and respond to threats.
  • Regularly inspect the campus for security, fire, and liability risk.
  • Participate in Safety and Risk committee(s) meetings.
  • Develop, implement, and periodically update a written safety and security plan including but not limited to: Athletic and Fine Arts Events, Special Events, Facilities, Emergency Response Planning, Medical Readiness, and Physical Property.
  • Provide and implement recommendations to improve safety drills procedures.

Event Management

  • Augment security staff with law enforcement agencies and off-duty police officers as required by specific events.
  • Work closely with local and school officials to provide fire safety, emergency medical services, and security for major school events.
  • Lead the development and implementation of traffic, parking management, and crowd control plans for major campus events.
  • Establish and monitor safety procedures for school-sponsored trips.
  • Monitor and implement procedures for secure transfer of money.
  • Manage campus access control system; ensure appropriate changes are made to accommodate off-hours events.

Patrol Operations / Personnel Management

  • Identify and conduct regular training related to traffic management, safety, and risk for Security and Facilities staff as well as the larger campus community.
  • Lead and train the school’s concealed carry TEAM.
  • Ensure compliance with operational procedures as they relate to traffic control.
  • Oversee training requirements for professional staff; providing training on a regular, ongoing basis.
  • Utilize campus security systems and personal interviews to prepare investigation reports for School leadership and, when required, external authorities.

Internal Audits and Reports

  • Manage listing / database of persons of interest.
  • Receives reports of school crime, investigating and documenting incidents.
  • Follow up on identified issues and make recommendations for resolution of issues.
  • Report regularly to the Head of School
  • Overall responsible for the “Threat Assessment / Crisis Management” Handbook
  • Create, generate, and manage, emergency response kits, security equipment, life safety equipment, etc.
  • Plan and manage departmental budget.

Security Systems and Crime Prevention

  • Monitor CCTV systems on an “as needed” basis for special events or during a problem or crisis.
  • Maintain a working relationship with the police and fire departments and act as primary liaison.
  • Perform multiple surveys of all campus property and facilities on a daily basis.

Community Relations

  • Maintain regular contact with administrators, department heads, and student groups.
  • Manage the relationship with the representatives of local government to ensure cooperation and coordination of the security department with law enforcement, firefighting agencies and other governmental and non-governmental emergency response departments.
  • Represent the department at meetings and special events on campus and at other institutions.
  • Act as liaison between school and local emergency service organizations.

Fleet and Equipment Maintenance

  • Work with Director of IT to oversee service with equipment vendors (CCTV, Access Control, Digital Radios and etc.).
  • Oversee driver training and procedures for school vehicles. Conduct regular safety inspections and scheduled maintenance.
  • Oversee safety equipment, i.e., AED’s, surveillance equipment.
Requirements:
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Experienced in overseeing safety and security for a large organization.
  • Is a believer in Jesus Christ and exemplifies Christian behavior and standards of conduct as outlined in FPD handbooks and standards.
  • Appropriate certifications.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies and procedures to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, data, and property.
  • Triage skills - prioritizing.
  • Knowledgeable of OSHA.
  • A heart for and understanding of ministry, with a desire to help those ministries in any way possible.
  • Relate well with K-12 children and their parents.
  • Proven leader of people.
  • Ability to develop relationships with students and network with all levels of police, fire, and emergency personnel (Federal, State, Local).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of safety and security operations and familiarity with law enforcement systems and procedures.
  • Experienced in conducting, assessing and responding to threat analysis.
  • Experience in law enforcement.
  • Assess use of force situations.
