Job Description
Perform duties of a custodian, as well as others duties related to Facilities Management operations as assigned by the Housing Lead Supervisor and the Manager of Building Services.


  • Ability to use cleaning equipment including a carpet cleaner, orbital scrubbing machine, and other light weight and heavy weight machines.
  • Report items that need to be repaired.
  • Ability to move moderately heavy items.
  • Remove snow at buildings entrances, sidewalks, and exterior stairs.
  • Sweep and mopping of floors, stairs (interior and exterior), and other hard surfaces.
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs in public areas. Collect loose debris and deposit it in the appropriate receptacles, remove liners of receptacles, place full liner in the appropriate collection area, and replace liner. Clean receptacle when dirty.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must have a strong customer orientation and be committed to building a team that provides superior service to Bethel and local community.
  • Clean and dust furniture, recreational equipment, walls, and interior doors.
  • Be well organized and able to prioritize work.
  • Maintain and clean custodial equipment.
  • Clean and service lavatories, including toilets, vanity areas, and shower rooms.
  • Perform duties for Summer Conferences.
  • Be able to build and maintain a good relationship with RD’s, RA’s, and other Facilities Management staff. .
  • Requires general knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to Hazardous Chemicals.
  • Windows and airlocks. Wash windows, window sills, and door frames.


Minimum Of 2 Years Custodial Experience.


High School degree or equivalent required.


  • Complies with environmental health and safety requirements and procedures as outlined in University and State policies and directives.
  • Requires working in and around chemicals.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and must be available outside of normal working hours if needed to support contingency operations such as snow removal or support of special events.
  • Most work is performed inside. Some projects may require traveling to various locations, both on and off campus.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

The Laboratory and Safety Coordinator is responsible for chemical safety and disposal, safety equipment, managing the stockroom, ordering of purchases, coordinating and preparing introductory labs, and training of laboratory teaching assistants.
  • Working knowledge of chemical nomenclature for ordering and inventory.
  • Participate in managing the university’s chemical hygiene plan.
  • Manage chemistry lab facilities and materials
  • Oversee maintenance of lab safety equipment and lab cleanliness.
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste collection and disposal procedures Coordinate with chemistry faculty on orders and safety.
  • Order chemicals and supplies.
  • Working knowledge of chemical reactivity for lab prep and waste disposal.
  • Ability to prepare introductory labs for about 20 students.
  • Maintain inventory records of chemicals and supplies.
  • Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for all Academic Departments.
  • Support laboratory teaching
  • Evaluate and update departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Supervise collection and shipment of hazardous waste.
  • Able to organize and manage multiple orders.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety best practices.
  • Oversee departmental chemical storage.
  • Oversee lab teaching assistant safety training.
  • Teach chemical safety course.
  • Submit repair/maintenance requests and coordinate with Facilities Management on work to be done.
  • Assist with general maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support others in college laboratory.
  • Excellent organizational skills, effective time-management, experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Perform and document regular laboratory safety inspections.
  • Prepare Chemicals and equipment for “introductory” and “general” chemistry lab courses. (CHE101D, CHE107D, CHE113D, CHE208, CHE215)
  • Work well with lab students and student workers.
  • Reconcile/allocate payments for department credit cards every month.
  • Teach CHE200 Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene, twice per year.
  • Supervise chemical safety


At least one year of experience managing a laboratory program, including ordering and safety.


Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field required. (Master’s degree preferred); Certified Scientific Material Manager preferred.


  • Working in a laboratory environment, sometimes requiring personal protective equipment (gloves, lab coat, goggles).
  • 10 hours/week; June 1-August 15
  • Working with chemicals (hazardous and non-hazardous).
  • Full-time; August 16 – May 31
