Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Resident Assistant for the Pre-College Summer Academies at the Office of Summer and Winter Sessions at Rutgers-New Brunswick. The Academies are each one-week (Sunday to Saturday) intensive, residential certificate programs for both domestic and international pre-college students ages 16 to 18.

Resident Assistants form the face and the voice of the Rutgers Pre-College Academies. As such all RAs must be committed to our mission, which is to foster and inspire strong, inclusive communities; encourage and support students in their academic, social and personal growth; help students develop skills to succeed in a diverse, global society; and promote the appreciation of diversity.
The Pre-College RAs will work together under the supervision of the Residence Hall Director, to develop and implement activities that foster safe, inclusive learning communities; serve as role models, exhibit the ability to be effective listeners and excellent resources, and will show ethical behavior at all times.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Become familiar and implement program policies and procedures
  • Participates in pre-program staff training.
  • Provides support to their residents around personal and academic issues and also serve as mediators helping students establish roommate agreements and resolve roommate conflicts and personal disputes
  • Participates in rotational duty schedule
  • Assumes full responsibility for and supervision of students from the hours of 6:00 pm – 9:00 am.
  • In the event of an emergency, all RAs are first line of response in the residence halls regarding issues such as fire and minor medical emergencies. In most emergency situations, the RA’s primary role is to call for additional help and to offer support for the individuals involved
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • All Pre-College RAs will be expected to be a role-model to the students enrolled in the Program by being involved on campus and living well-balanced life-styles.
  • Plans evening recreation activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and/or up to 4 years of relevant office, clerical, bookkeeping, library assistant or related experience depending on the duties to be performed
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience as an RA and/or working with high school students is preferred.

Special Conditions
  • Selected applicants will be required to attend an overnight residence life training program prior to the start of the academies and complete a CPR/AED training.
  • The RAs will supervise students from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm for dinner and resident activities; and 8:00 am to 9:00 am for breakfast. RAs will also complete rounds throughout the evening to ensure the safety of residents and will be available for emergencies during the overnight hours.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
