Role Overview
We are looking for:
  • Develop a detailed understanding of Solvay products and applications to assist in image interpretation and work as part of the broader characterization labs team to suggest additional or complementary analysis techniques to aid customers in multifaceted understanding.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety. Perform all work activities in a safe and timely manner. Proactively identify safety related items and initiate appropriate actions. Participate in safety audits and safety meetings.
  • Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction in analysis quality and turnaround time and work as part of the microscopy team to manage sample back log and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Effectively communicate results through presentations and reports. Provide full, complete, and accurate documentation of all work as required by SOPs and Company policies and procedures.
  • Understand customer needs and develop new methods to support them. Implement new analysis techniques that could provide solutions.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required. Routinely maintain and clean laboratory facilities and equipment, manage the laboratory waste.
  • Conduct analysis of polymer samples with various microscopy techniques (optical microscopy, polarized light microscopy, hot stage microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy). Prepare polymer samples for microscopy including cutting, polishing, cryofracture, sputter coating, ultramicrotomy.
  • Develop and validate methods for automated image analysis using software platforms including ImageJ, Matlab, Python and other.
  • Engage in discussions with scientists and engineers regarding sample history, analysis objectives, sample preparation, results explanation. Make decisions on analysis pathway based on customer needs. Provide detailed analysis of images to promote customer understanding of findings.

  • Provide timely support to Solvay Materials product development, research, and manufacturing operations.
  • Develop into a recognized expert in the fields of microscopy, image analysis and micro-/nano-scale analysis. Contribute expertise to R&D programs and the company in general.

  • You will become part of the Analytical Characterization team that works in partnership with the company's research and Innovation Scientists, Engineers, and Chemists to develop value-added products and sustainable technologies that bring benefits to many aspects of people’s daily life.
  • In your role, you will have the opportunity to bridge fundamental and applied research, in support of a diversity of markets and projects, from aerospace and automotive to electronics and healthcare.
You will bring:
  • Experienced with polymer chemistry and polymeric materials.
  • Experience in using machine learning for image analysis applications.
  • Practical and integrative knowledge of material characterization, focus on microscopy.
  • Knowledge in additional orthogonal analytical techniques such as IR/Raman spectroscopy and nano-spectroscopy techniques, failure analysis and comprehensive material analysis.
  • Experience in developing automated image analysis methods.
  • Ability to lead the development and implementation of image analysis techniques.
  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry or Material Science with a strong research and coursework emphasis in microscopy, image analysis and other analytical techniques.
  • Excellent instrument skills including instrument maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Laboratory management and operational excellence.
  • In-depth understanding of microscopy techniques for material characterization including TEM, SEM and polarized light.
  • At least 3 years of analytical laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Advanced computer skills to navigate instruments computer systems and data processing.
  • Analytical method development and validation.
  • Expertise in operating TEM, SEM, AFM and light microscopes.
You will get:
  • The U.S. base salary range reasonably expected to be paid for this position is $91,000 to $114,000 per year. Since actual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted base salary range. Total compensation for this role also includes bonus and/or other incentives.
