Hiring Department

University of Missouri Physics & Astronomy Department


The Research Machinist (Research Engineering Technician I) will work in a well-equipped shop which has been in existence in its current location since 1966. The shop has built research equipment for many different University of Missouri Departments as well as national labs and research centers around the world.

The primary purpose of this position is to fabricate research equipment which does not exists or isn't commercially available. The fabrication process utilizes manual and computerized machine tools. In addition, the position also maintains, diagnoses, & repairs a wide variety of research equipment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled machine work to construct research instruments.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely with researchers, students, & customers.
  • Uses manual lathes, milling machines, drills, grinders, etc. as well as CNC milling machine and CNC lathe to machine required parts.
  • Uses precision measuring equipment to measure & check parts.
  • Uses TIG welding process to make precision welds, as well as high and ultra-high vacuum welds used on research equipment.
  • Uses sheet metal brake, roll, shear, & spot welder to make sheet metal parts as required.
  • Uses creativity to make unusual set-ups for fabrication of prototype and one-off parts.
  • Uses MasterCAM to write programs for lathe and mill.
  • Uses helium mass spectrometer leak detector to test vacuum welds.
  • Is able to work with Solidworks or AutoCAD to manipulate drawings.
  • Uses a wide variety of material as required for job i.e.: aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloys, copper, alumina, silicon, misc. plastics, etc.
  • Performs maintenance on all machines in shop as needed.

Salary

Salary Range: $17.43 - $32.21
GGS Grade: 008
University Title: Research Engineering Technician I

M-F 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two-year associates degree in Machine Tool Technology with 2-4 years machine shop experience.
  • Detail oriented, neat, organized, and conscientious.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of customers.
  • Proficiency in MasterCAM
  • Wide mechanical background.
