Chevron is accepting applications for a position of research engineer in the FCC Technology R&D Team within the Catalysis, Separations and Reactor Science unit, which is part of the Downstream Technology and Services (DT&S) Department of Chevron’s Technology Center (CTC) located in Richmond, CA.


As a research engineer, you will conduct both experimental and modeling work under the directions of technical team leader and project managers. You will contribute to safe, reliable and cost-effective operations of a variety of testing equipment and instruments to support various R&D and technical service projects. You will work closely with other engineers and technicians to effectively communicate and align work schedule to meet project deadlines. You will demonstrate strong capability in generating and interpreting quality data, driving data to decisions and identifying new opportunities.


Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:


  • Manage intellectual property (IP) in FCC and related areas
  • Work with users and IT professionals to maintain and improve FCC model and engineering tools for new business needs
  • Support the research and development of coprocessing renewable and circular feedstocks. Propose and validate new ideas in process and catalyst improvements.
  • Use in-house FCC model and engineering tools to rank catalysts based on constrained and optimized performance
  • Hands-on train and supervise technicians in bench scale equipment operations, maintenance and troubleshooting. Maintain and improve lab equipment reliability to provide best quality of data.
  • Plan, design and execute experiments to support Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) catalyst and additive selections for Chevron wholly owned and JV refineries
  • Communicate catalyst testing results with customers and suppliers. Recommend catalysts and additives to refineries and monitor FCC unit changeovers.


Required Qualifications


  • Ability to work with complex tasks, complex projects and multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong computer skills, including using commercial software such as Aspen HYSYS or PROII and developing computer programs using Python, Matlab, VBA etc.
  • Mechanical skills for assembling piping and equipment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in multi-cultural environment
  • 2-10 years’ experience in the field of catalysis, kinetics and process development
  • Strong data analysis skills, able to generate complex data and interpret data at high level and in creative ways
  • Ph. D in chemistry, material science, chemical engineering or other related discipline
  • Strong commitment to OE (Operational Excellence) in lab and office environment
  • Hands-on experience with analytical instruments such as GC or GC-MS


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in mechanistic, thermodynamic and kinetic analysis on complex chemical or refining processes
  • Experience in biofuels and/or waste plastics
  • Experience in FCC is desired but not required
  • Experience in designing, building, operating and troubleshooting laboratory scale catalytic reactors at elevated pressures and temperatures
  • Experience in process development and scale-up

The anticipated salary range for this position is $112,200 – $221,900. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
