Description


The American Public Power Association (APPA) is looking for a Research and Development Analyst to provide expertise and program management support for the Energy Transition Community (ETC) and the APPAs research and development programs. The Analyst oversees activities with the objective of empowering public power utilities to manage the energy transition to low emission resources and continue to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective electricity. The Research and Development Analyst will create new content to help guide public power utilities in their transition to high resilience, low emission resources. This individual will provide technical input and direction to associated projects, serves as the principal point of contact for information/guidance on program activity, solicits and responds to member input.


Please note: This is not a remote position. Candidates must be in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. APPA offers a flexible work schedule for full-time employees, and the option for telework is available after 2 months of employment (with supervisor approval).


  • Supervises the writing, editing, and production of reports, manuals and/or videos resulting from ETC projects.
  • Attends EPRI and other R&D-related industry events. Monitors external R&D group activities, reports, and developments.
  • Provides strategic and tactical guidance to external and internal groups that advance the objectives of the program.
  • Undertakes assignments, as needed, based on the direction of the department and APPA leadership.
  • Coordinates with APPA staff on the Moving Public Power Forward strategic initiative, utilizing ETC resources to develop technical reports, case studies, toolkits, and other materials on emerging technologies to assist members in the energy transition.
  • Assists with standing programs such as RP3, SEP, DEED, and eRT as needed.
  • Serves as the staff liaison to the Grid Modernization track of the Engineering and Operations Conference. Activities include: participating in the planning meeting, providing subject matter expertise to develop a track of breakout sessions (identifying topics, drafting descriptions, inviting speakers, managing logistics with speakers/officers), traveling to the event to oversee and manage sessions, and identifying incoming officers. Also serves as staff contact for members working in this area, providing assistance as needed.
  • Monitors the Department of Energy (DOE) website and other venues for grant opportunities for the Association.
  • Conducts energy transition-related member surveys, performs statistical data analysis and collection, and prepares timely and informative reports for members as needed.
  • Works with the Principal Investigator (PI) on cooperative agreements to ensure continued compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agency reporting requirements.
  • Identifies new programs, technologies and trends impacting the area of responsibility and works with APPA management to initiate necessary resource allocation adjustments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Leads the Energy Transition Community (ETC) working group and coordinates with consultant to develop materials and agenda for meetings.


Requirements


  • Ability to direct and manage various projects, administer policies and procedures, and prepare comprehensive strategic plans and reports.
  • Experience in energy sector/member utility and/or trade association preferred.
  • Familiarity with database management and web application development processes.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and handle a variety of tasks simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university required.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and facilitate a major meeting with multiple activities.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) in the day-to-day essential duties of the job.
  • Ability to present ideas clearly, concisely and accurately, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • 5 years of professional experience in data and/or written analytics, project management or support, and customer service and engagement.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time in and out of town.
