Job Description

General:

The Reinke and Greco labs of the Department of Genetics at Yale University are looking to hire a scientist specializing in research development, scientific writing and communication to maximize research discovery and impact across projects in both labs. Working closely with Prof. Reinke and Prof. Greco, you will be responsible for research synergy and scientific strategy of each lab through discussions and collaborations with the PIs as well as with the lab members. A major part of the role is to facilitate research development through strategizing and writing grant submissions, research manuscripts, letters of intent, letters of support, administrative reporting and so on. Additionally, the position will provide key strategic support to further core values of diversity, innovation and excellence in biomedical research shared by both labs and the Department of Genetics.

This is a multidimensional role that spans academic, administrative, research support and advisory activities. Working closely with Prof. Reinke and Prof. Greco, you will serve as a trusted advisor, researcher, writer, trainer and project planner to both labs. For the successful applicant, this position will provide excellent training in the skills of research development and scientific communication in two distinct research areas, which will be useful for a subsequent career in research development, science writing, editing, and/or policy. Further mentoring and training is potentially available through our Department of Genetics Office for Strategic Research Development.

About you:

We seek an individual with a background in the life sciences who has well-developed writing skills, the ability to multi-task, strong critical thinking and a strong sense of collegiality and responsibility. Additionally, the individual must be motivated, reliable and flexible, and can work both independently and within a team. The successful applicant will embrace the fundamental importance of mentoring and enriching the scientific growth and professional development of all members of the labs. The successful applicant will thrive in the scientific, cultural and intellectual diversity that fosters a strong sense of collegiality and community in the Greco and Reinke labs as well as the Department of Genetics.

About the role:

The successful applicant will report directly to both Drs Reinke and Greco. The primary responsibilities of the role are:

-To attend lab meetings and interact one to one with all members of both laboratories to develop a deep understanding of all the scientific projects occurring in the Reinke and Greco labs

-Work with the heads of the lab to plan, organize, and write letters of intent, major grant renewals and de novo grant submissions

-Provide key input on the organization and writing of new and ongoing manuscript submissions

-Co-write letters of support for lab members and others more broadly associated with the Greco and Reinke labs

-Provide support for PIs Reinke and Greco in new and ongoing lab initiatives and research administration on an ad hoc basis

About us:

The Greco and Reinke labs engage in cutting edge science, using the mouse (Greco) and

C. elegans (Reinke) model organisms. They employ diverse experimental modalities, including genomics, imaging, genetics, and cell biology, providing a broad and complementary range of scientific questions and scientific approaches for the applicant to learn about (see www.grecolab.org and hIps://medicine.yale.edu/lab/reinke/). The two labs share common laboratory space, with the professors in adjacent offices nearby. Both labs actively promote inclusivity within the scientific community, prioritize mentoring, support scientific growth of trainees, and strive to make science accessible to everyone. We work for and stand by an anti- racist and anti-sexist community. Thus, the successful applicant will join a vibrant community of exceptional scientists who recognize the fundamental importance of diversity as a key driver of innovation in science.

Qualifications:

Candidates should hold a PhD in the life sciences. Candidates must have outstanding written communication skills and be highly organized with the demonstrated ability to prioritize, plan, multi-task, and meet deadlines. Prior experience in writing and/or editorial expertise is not required, however may be considered favorably.

Application Instructions:

Applicants interested in this position should apply by joint email to Drs Greco and Reinke ([email protected]; [email protected]). Applications should contain a cover letter describing your motivation for the position and relevant experience, your CV, and three names willing to provide confidential letters of recommendation. Please send to the attention of Dr Valerie Reinke and Dr Valentina Greco. If selected for further consideration, you will be asked to provide a de novo writing sample and have a joint interview with Drs Greco and Reinke.
