I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Summary:
The Department of Health Policy and Management in the Milken Institute School of Public
Health at the George Washington University seeks a Research Assistant for its National Center
for Medical-Legal Partnership (NCMLP). NCMLP works to improve the health of communities
by leading health care, law, and public health sectors in an integrated approach to combatting
health-harming social conditions like poor housing, lack of access to proper food, and
community violence. NCMLP convenes fellowships, learning networks, and events to help these
sectors work together, while also building the evidence base for how addressing legal and health
needs in tandem can help improve the health and well-being of communities.
The research assistant will report to NCMLP’s Director and provide support to the entire
NCMLP team.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
  • Assist with content development and communication activities, including updating the
project website and social media accounts and providing research for media stories;
  • Provide administrative support for the planning NCMLP’s training and technical assistance
events including coordinating speakers, travel and session materials;
  • Assist with report writing, preparation of literature reviews, and/or data collection forms and
procedures; and
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Key competencies necessary include:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (MS Word and Excel) and Google Drive tools;
  • Comfortable with learning how to use MailChimp and SurveyMonkey to complete NCMLP
work;
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work effectively;
  • Timeliness and time management skills;
  • Responsiveness to both team members and senior departmental faculty.
  • Superb organizational skills;
  • Genuine interest in the work of NCMLP; and
  • Excellent writing skills;

Minimum Qualifications:
Successful research assistant candidates vary; we accept applications from current
undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, and post-grads with backgrounds in various fields, including (but not limited to): political science, international relations, study of religion, social and forensic psychology, and data science/statistics.
  • Applicants must demonstrate previous research experience on issues related to
terrorism, violent/non-violent extremism, or political violence.
  • Subject matter knowledge related to the nuances of extremism in the United States is
preferred.
  • Applicants must be proficient in standard Microsoft Office programs
(Word/Excel/PowerPoint/etc.).
  • Language skills are a plus, as is experience with social media analysis and/or use of data
analysis software (including SPSS/Stata, R, Python, etc.).

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
BA/BS in communications, public health, health, public policy, or other related discipline is
required, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
