Job Summary
The Office of Institutional Research (IR) is looking for an enthusiastic, dependable, and detail-oriented Research Assistant to work closely with staff and to assist with data and office management tasks.
Though no experience is necessary for the position, the ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills and a desire to learn more about higher education administration and research.
There is some flexibility to this position and students are welcome to apply to be an IR Research Assistant in any of the three following formats:
  • A semester-long position where the student is expected to work an average of five hours each week.
  • A limited, 40-hour position that can be used to fulfill internship requirements for the College of Arts & Sciences or the professional schools. Completed over one semester or two semesters.
  • A 10 to 20-hour, project-based position that can be considered as a ‘micro-internship’. Completed over one semester or two semesters.


Please state the desired position within the cover letter. Regardless of the format, this is a paid position that reports to the Assistant Director of Institutional Research.

Core Duties
  • Assists in producing, editing, and proofreading professional research documents (e.g. research reports, literature searches) on the computer using Word
  • Assists staff with data tasks (e.g. entry, cleaning, collection, coding, analysis, visualization, presentation) on the computer using Excel, SPSS, and/or other software
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent
  • Perform general office tasks including organize incoming data requests, emailing correspondence, updating the IR website and other digital platforms
  • As appropriate given skill-set, assists staff in research design and data collection

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with MS Office, particularly MS Word and MS Excel
  • Ability to follow detailed directions and communicate within a professional team environment
  • Ability to responsibly follow time schedule
  • No minimum education required
  • Ability to handle confidential and/or sensitive information with professionalism and discretion

Preferred Qualifications
  • Green Dot anti-violence bystander training or willingness to complete Green Dot anti-violence bystander training
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with any of the following: conducting social science research, data mining, data visualization software, web design, and statistical analysis
