Job Description
Overview:
Join AIR as a Research Assistant with our Education Statistics team. The mission of our team of experts is to provide statistical evidence that is meaningful, timely, accurate, and trustworthy. Our Education Statistics portfolio focuses on the development, collection, analysis, and communication of international, national, and state statistics. Our primary practice hubs are:
  • Standards and assessment
  • Measurement and statistics in large-scale surveys

The Research Assistant position will primarily be located out of AIR’s Crystal City, VA office and have the option to telework four days a week.

The assistant would contribute to the development of statistics about education that inform the discussion, debate and planning of decision-makers at national, state, and local levels through a contract with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Our work includes survey and assessment design, analysis of assessment and survey data, and reporting and dissemination of research results.

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities for the position include:
  • Support technical reviews of data products, statistical documentation, and assessment data reports from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
  • Assist staff in the review, identification and development of scholarly information describing research findings
  • Review and provide comments on draft NCES products (e.g., tables, reports, data files, file documentation, and web sites) for statistical and technical soundness and support the lead reviewer in documenting and coordinating the review process
  • Perform quality control reviews of statistical content, statistical tables, graphics, and text
  • Participate on research and analysis teams, which support the development and reporting of survey and assessment data for the NAEP and other NCES studies and supporting work of other research and reporting team members
Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in such fields as statistics, economics, sociology, psychology, computer science or other related fields
  • Interest in research in education, survey, and/or assessment and quantitative analysis
  • Knowledge of applied statistics (e.g., probability and statistical inference, regression, etc.)
  • Ability to use statistical software programs (e.g., R, SPSS, Stata or SAS) to analyze data; Proficiency in programming language such as Python is plus but not required

Skills:

  • Efficient writing skills
  • Strong attention to detail with commitment to accuracy
  • Effective communicator continually demonstrating sensitivity to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with individuals from diverse backgrounds and at all levels

This position is open to U.S. citizens only. Upon hire, incumbent will be required to obtain clearance through the Electronic Questionnaires for Investigations Processing (e-QIP) system.


Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship (including H-1B sponsorship) is not available for this position. Depending on project work, qualified candidates may need to meet certain residency requirements.

AIR’s Total Rewards Program, is designed to reward our staff competitively and motivate them to achieve our critical mission. This position offers an anticipated salary of $25.50/hour. Salary offers are made based on internal equity within the institution and external equity with competitive markets. Please note this is the annual salary range for candidates that are based in the United States.
