Job Description

Senior Research and Development Scientist

Spartanburg, SC


We are hiring a Senior Research and Development Scientist to join our client. This position is located in Spartanburg, SC.


Responsibilities / Job Requirements:

  • Follows all guidelines of the Corporate and Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) policies by consistently performing high quality work while minimizing waste generation.
  • Leverages science and engineering fundamentals to ensure efficient and robust technology scale-up from laboratory to pilot scale through production assets.
  • Supports knowledge capture and organizational knowledge growth via effective data summaries, reports, and presentations.
  • Captures and processes IP opportunities to protect technology and competitive advantage.
  • Identifies emerging technologies, groups engaged in novel technology activities and opportunities for partnership and leverage.
  • Leads the agile polymer design process, rapidly progressing from concept to final design leveraging chemistry and process fundamentals to arrive at optimal solution to critical functional requirements.
  • Inspires and motivates all members of the R&D team to contribute and continuously improve.
  • Works with global business teams, customers and technology partners to define innovation opportunities.
  • Ensures efficient experimental designs, execution and analysis to enable accelerated learning.


Education/Skills/ Experience:

Education and Technical

  • Demonstrated proficiency in product development spanning entire process from conception to commercialization
  • Demonstrated ability to use structure-property relationships and materials response behaviors to problem-solve.
  • Ph.D. (2-5 years), M.S. (5-7 years) and B.S (7-10 years) in organic or polymer chemistry, or related field with pertinent experience. Strong background in polymers synthesis a plus. Strong synthesis background in small-molecule development also considered.
  • High proficiency in polymer chemistry fundamentals, with experience in the morphology of polymers preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge / experience with a variety of analytical characterization methods.

  • Ability to rapidly learn and pivot in response to insights and demands.
  • Effective working across functions and geographies.
  • A hands-on Scientist who leads by example enabling entire R&D team to contribute to their full potential and grow.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage work and work schedules to support overall program objectives.
  • A track record of commercializing novel polymers.
  • Proficient leveraging statistical tools and methods to answer technical questions.
  • Highly effective defining and executing experiments to enable accelerated learning
