The responsibility of R&D Chemist involves professional work in research, development, design, operation, evaluation and improvement of processes, plants, equipment, methods or products. The work involves changes in the chemical composition or physical state of materials and requires primarily application of knowledge of the principles and practices of chemical engineering, chemistry and other scientific and engineering disciplines. You will design, synthesize and test new products to be used as additives in polyurethane (PU) formulations. The R&D Chemist will effectively manage multiple projects, ensuring clear alignment of goals and deliverables within business and market needs. As part of the global R&D team, you will participate in the market introduction of those new products. You will also provide technical support on existing Polyurethane (PU) product portfolio to selective customer accounts and countries within North America.

·A focus for this position will be in the area of flexible foams.

·The other focus will be the development of catalysts for polyurethane materials.

Job Duties:

·Review Safe Operating Procedures and follow the company policies & safety guidelines.

·Plan analytical procedures used in complex analysis situations by adapting standard company procedures or devising local procedures where necessary.

·Supervise the conduct of chemical analyses determining the presence/quantity of chemical products.

·Establish value on standard samples and check accuracy of laboratory weights, balances and volumetric glassware.

·Planning and execution of laboratory projects with emphasis on synthesis, characterization and performance testing up to pilot scale of new products.

·Control lab activities for highest safety and to ensure compliance with local regulations. Participate in team effort to achieve those.

·Own the development of new projects, apply project management discipline for timely progression of the allocated project according to plans.

·Efficiently interface with selected customers to achieve commercial introduction of PU additives focusing on new products. Establish efficient customer relationship build-up as part of this effort.

·Create Intellectual Property relevant for the business - prepare invention disclosures when relevant.

·Support the qualification of alternative suppliers for strategic raw materials.

·Review monthly inventory of chemical supplies and equipment.

·May substitute for R&D Director in his or her absence and participate in monthly facility staff meetings.

·Represent company at industry technical meetings and trade shows as required.

·Develop, write and provide research reports as requested.

Qualifications/Requirements:

·Degree in Organic Chemistry or Polymer Science with 2-4 years of experience of new products development in the field of chemistry.

·3+ years of experience of the flexible or rigid Polyurethane (PU foam or Polyurethane (PU) elastomer industrial processes.

·Demonstrated skills in organic and/or polymer chemistry.

·Familiarity or experience with polyurethane foam technology and additives.

·In-depth understanding of catalyst mechanisms in polyurethane reactions.

·Familiarity with standard laboratory techniques.

·Must have excellent analytical skills to develop reports and analysis.

·Excellent organizational abilities including prioritization and managements of multiple projects for the timely delivery of objectives.

·Demonstrated teamwork skills and capabilities.

·Proactive and independent worker, flexible attitude to work.

·Excellent attention to detail and problem solving.

·Confident communicator with ability to foster strong relationships for the coordination of activities within all business units.

·Strong organization skills.

·Must be forward thinking individual.

·Must be able to think problems through, foresee potential roadblocks, and develop a strategy to overcome them.

·Able to work under stress, meet deadlines, and complete projects according to schedule.

·Able to work closely with Senior Managers.

·Coordinate R&D projects and the production of sample materials and reports.

·Communicate information to other R&D team members regarding projects, inquiries and production support.

·Experience interfacing with Japanese colleagues a plus.
