Job Description
The Registrar is responsible for updating and maintaining all digital and physical records related to the museum's permanent and study collections. Working with the Curator of Collections & Exhibitions, the Registrar oversees the physical care and storage of permanent and study collections, administers incoming and outgoing loans, tracks artifact location and condition, and maintains an accurate inventory of the museum's collection.

Duties Include:
1. Record Keeping
  • Maintains and updates records which include, but are not limited to, initial registration records, accession records, donor files, catalog records, photographs, condition reports, loan records, location records, conservation records, deaccession records, and correspondence, both written & digitized.
  • Accessions new acquisitions into museum's permanent collection.
  • Conducts complete inventory on all objects (excluding archives) every 5 years.
  • Manages the digital and physical files of the permanent collection, study collection, temporary deposits, incoming and outgoing loans, and old uncatalogued artifacts.
  • Implements the museum's Collections Policy and procedures under the supervision of the Curator of Exhibits and Collections.
2. Storage and Display
  • Works with the Curator of Exhibits and Collections to oversee collections organization and storage.
  • Monitors environmental conditions and lighting for the protection of collections both on display and in storage.
  • Assists the Curator of Exhibits and Collections with the installation and deinstallation of all artifacts in the museum's permanent, rotating, and traveling exhibits.
  • Recommends security upgrades for the safety of the objects on exhibit and in storage.
  • Monitors pest activity through the Museum's integrated pest management plan (1PM).
3. Job Function - Miscellaneous
  • Participates in Collections Committee meetings.
  • Recommends objects for eventual deaccessioning.
  • Works with Curator of Exhibits and Collections on old loan project, resolves old loans not kept current by contacting lenders and heirs. Prepares for eventual abandoned cultural property process.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Supervises collections graduate assistants, volunteers, and/ or interns.
  • Responsible for utilizing appropriate minor conservation procedures, recommends artifacts for professional conservation and maintains overall physical care of collections.
4. Southern Maritime Collection
  • Assists with oversight of the Southern Maritime Collection under the supervision of the Curator of Exhibits and Collections.
  • Assists the Curator of Exhibits and Collections with the care and access of the Southern Maritime Collection in North Charleston.
  • Recommends any environmental or security upgrades or changes needed for the SMC and recommends any new equipment or supplies needed to maintain the SMC and provide better public access.

A bachelor's degree in history or museology or related field and related experience.
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to identify, research, and catalog military history material culture according to AAM accreditation standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Broad knowledge of SC military history.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, bend and stoop.
