JOB SUMMARY:

  • Provides and coordinates infusion activities to assure compassionate and effective patient care.
  • Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within the clinical specialty.
  • Accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care.
  • A clinically competent Registered Nurse who initiates and monitors specific phases of infusion therapy, central line care with blood drawing, IVP medications, chemotherapy, biotherapy and phlebotomy.
  • This role promotes a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach towards patients, families and all members of the care delivery team.
  • Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in the development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service and cost-effectiveness.

Qualifications
  • Current Maryland Registered Nurse license required.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred.
  • BLS required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • Successful completion of ONS Chemotherapy & Bio-therapy training course at time of hire or within six (6) months of hire.

Work Orientation & Experience:

  • Successful completion of clinical orientation and IV skill assessment.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ advanced skills and an appropriate level of clinical expertise in the field of oncology and/or critical care is required.
  • Additionally, one (1) year outpatient experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, practice and education in order to provide this specialty service in an outpatient environment.

Skills & Abilities: Ability to: a) monitor, assess, and record patient progress against a plan of care; b) convey effective verbal and written communications between oncology practice, cancer care team and related programs; c) adjust the plan of care based on assessed changes in patients status; d) handle multiple priorities; e) respond to emergency situations appropriately; f) work independently and take initiative to achieve favorable patient outcomes. Demonstrate skills in: g) planning, implementing, and evaluating patient services; h) making effective decisions; i) critical thinking and problem-solving skills; j) crisis management; k) adapts hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the infusion center; l) verbal and written patient and staff educational programs; m) chemotherapy teaching n) organizing work, setting priorities, meeting deadlines; o) working with physicians and other team members to coordinate patient care; p) ability to work successfully with diverse types of individuals including, management staff, general public, and team members; q) facilitating patient access to community; r) is computer literate
