The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is accepting resumes for a paid internship with the Regional Analytics Division. The ideal candidate will be a current student who is interested in having a springboard to their career in GIS. The ideal candidate will be familiar with GIS concepts and software, especially the Esri suite of software, and have spreadsheet/database skills. Experience working with Esri GIS products and Microsoft Access, and Excel is preferred. Length of internship will be determined based on the candidate’s preferences, qualifications, and performance.

Projects that an intern can expect to work on include the following:

  • Assisting in update of existing land use feature class. These data are used to determine current conditions for projections of population and employment, understanding windblown dust to sources for air quality modeling, among other uses both within MAG and in MAG’s member agencies. Skills required/taught: polygon feature editing.
  • Cataloging development projects and general plan amendment and updating the respective feature classes. Developments and general plans are used to determine future land use and in the projection of future population and employment. Skills required/taught: heads-up digitizing, polygon feature editing, attribute editing.
  • Compiling data and performing quality checks on tabular data for MAG’s Employer database. The employer database serves a number of important functions within MAG and for the MAG member agencies, including understanding the spatial distribution of employment as it relates to current and projected populations. Skills required/taught: Access database entry; pivot tables, charting, and graphing in Excel; geocoding.
