Job Description

Job Summary

Energy & Facilities (E&F) operates and manages Harvard’s energy supplies, district energy plants, and utility infrastructures on the Cambridge/Allston campuses, as well as 24/7 facilities -related call, alarm monitoring and dispatch center. E&F provides a broad portfolio of labor-based services, including building maintenance, landscaping and custodial to a large portion of the University, as well as engineering, technical, and sustainability services. Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) a department within E&F, offers primary building maintenance, landscape, fire safety, custodial and event support services to Harvard schools and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with regulatory requirements and customer-determined standards.

Position Summary: Responsible for collection, delivery, and processing of solid waste and recyclables on the Cambridge, Allston, and Longwood campuses of Harvard University. Provides prompt, efficient, reliable refuse service which meets or exceeds customer expectations. Works closely with landscapers, custodians, Dining Service employees, and outside vendors.

Position Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains quality of materials collected to meet end market specifications. Maintains understanding of specifications and communicates them to customers.
  • Picks up trash and/or recyclables from designated areas of Cambridge, Allston and Longwood campuses on a daily route schedule. Sorts out, bales up, otherwise processes, and delivers material to appropriate storage containers at 175 North Harvard Street, Allston, commercial transfer stations and materials recovery facilities in the greater Boston area, or other designated sites.
  • Coordinates pick-ups of full storage containers with contracted waste haulers and industrial end recycling markets.
  • Meets special pick-up requests as time allows.
  • Maintains operational safety, tidiness, cleanliness, security, and efficiency of recycling transfer stations at Robinson Hall and 175 North Harvard Street.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains and monitors vehicles and other equipment to assure sound operation and safety of all functions.

Basic Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to drive safely and comfortably on congested urban roads in vehicles of up to 60,000 GVW with standard shift and air brakes. Ability to use automated heavy equipment.
  • Commercial Driver's License (Class A or Class B) and clean driving record.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Additional Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with operation of packer trucks and moving truck experience preferred.
  • Work overtime and on holidays to complete each day's routes, especially during move-ins, Commencement, move-outs, and clean-out periods at the beginning and end of each semester, and participate in overtime and holiday snow removal duties including salting, sanding, and operating a variety of equipment.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to adhere to all standard safety procedures and codes required in handling and transporting hazardous materials, performing work in accordance with recognized trade and university standards.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a sense of ownership and pride in performance along with a service-oriented approach.
  • Must be well-organized and be able to work independently without close supervision and take initiative, when necessary, as well as be capable of working as a member of a team and in conjunction with other trades.
  • Required to wear a clean, neat uniform and to maintain a professional image at all times.
  • Must limit vacation days to certain times of the year.
  • Must be quality focused, customer service oriented and routinely able to communicate with peers and customers clearly and professionally.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Commercial Driver's License (Class A or Class B) and clean driving record.

Physical Requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to carry moderately heavy items up and down stairs, making many trips in and out of the vehicle each day.
  • Ability to tilt and roll two-wheeled barrels weighing up to three hundred pounds a distance of up to one hundred yards.
  • Ability to push a loaded cart with gross weight of up to 600 pounds up onto a lift gate with a 15-degree incline.
  • Ability to pick up bagged refuse weighing up to 80 pounds, lift, and throw into a door six feet off the ground several times daily.
  • Ability to tilt and roll, with help, a one-thousand pounds bale a distance of 20 feet and lift it upright for storage.

Emergency Status Designation: Critical Operations Personnel (required to provide on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management).
