Job Description
Nature of Work

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for performing supervisory and professional work in the assistance of development and operations of youth and adult recreation programs for the community, including but not limited to, after school programs, summer camps, toddler, teen, adult and senior programs, special interest programming, special event planning and programming for individuals with special needs. Under administrative direction, this responsible and specialized work may also include assistance with planning the operations of several recreation facilities. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring compliance with all policies, procedures and regulations, administering the programs' budgets and sustaining a culture of professionalism and respect at all levels. Work also involves providing customer service and creative and innovative planning to maximize participation and adapt programs to meet the needs, interests and abilities of the community. Supervision is received from the Recreation Program Manager and requires considerable independent judgment in selecting the proper courses of action. The role requires the incumbent to work a highly flexible schedule.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Assists in preparing program proposals, recreation program budgets and managing professional services and independent contractor agreements.
  • May perform emergency custodial maintenance work. Set up tables, sports equipment, chairs and like for classes and programs.
  • Assists with preparing and administering individual program budgets as appropriate; monitor expenditures and payroll in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitors department assets, conducts facility maintenance inspections and implements corrective courses of action regarding facility maintenance, furniture, fixtures, equipment, utilities, and regular maintenance.
  • Assists with purchasing equipment, supplies and operating inventory for recreation programs in compliance with the City's procurement requirements.
  • Responds to resident or park patron complaints; prepares information and marketing bulletins, news releases, and other publicity on recreation program activities and special events.
  • Provides clerical support, program registration, answers telephones and emails and maintains correspondence with other divisions or agencies
  • Assists with coordinating activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, promoting teambuilding, ensuring staff provides excellent customer service, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • May open and close the operations of the recreation facility.
  • Assists Recreation Program Manager in overseeing all youth, teen, adult, senior and special needs programming for the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Performs other related work and special projects as required.
  • Assists in recruiting, training, supervising, directing and evaluating staff to include contracted instructors and volunteers.
  • Assists Recreation Program Manager with implementing and evaluating recreational activities, programs and special events.

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Florida Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Parks & Recreation, recreation/physical education, leisure services, education or a related field. Experience and certifications may be reviewed as a substitute for education on a year-to-year basis.
  • Six (6) years of professional recreation experience, which must include three (3) years of lead supervisory experience planning and implementing recreational programs, fitness and parks, athletics, supervision and evaluation of staff and facilities; an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be considered.
  • Applicant must be able to work varying shifts, holidays, weekends and evening hours.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Applicant must become First Aid and CPR certified within one (1) year of hire.

Preferences
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)
  • Other nationally or state recognized certifications relevant to Parks and Recreation

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone, computer and personal contact.
  • Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, and kneeling.
  • This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, alone or in a team
  • Some crawling, reaching, balancing, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.
