SUMMARY
Individuals working as Recreation Leaders in the Merit System perform a variety of tasks associated with developing and implementing recreational programs and managing recreational facilities. Employees in this job class are responsible for developing and coordinating recreation programs, activities and special events for diverse groups of patrons. They regularly inspect the facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure the recreation center is properly maintained. Additionally, they spend time developing relationships with their community members to help market and promote the facilities' activities.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Ensures the maintenance and upkeep of the recreation center building, the grounds surrounding the recreation center, and the supplies and equipment used in the recreation center by inspecting facilities and equipment and ensuring needed maintenance is performed.
  • Documents information and maintains records and files regarding recreation center activities and programs.
  • Develops and coordinates recreational programs/activities and/or special events for various groups (e.g., recreation center patrons, seniors, youth, etc.) by planning and scheduling the activities in conjunction with existing programs and events.
  • Develops marketing/advertising programs and activities of the recreation center in order to make the community aware of the various programs and events hosted by the recreation center.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
  • Develops, participates, and coordinates youth, adults, and/or seniors recreational sports leagues by planning and overseeing the implementation of the league.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following Minimum Qualifications are required for this job.   • Experience assisting in the planning and development of recreation programs and activities (e.g., recreational sports leagues, summer camp programs, aquatic programs and special events, etc.).
  • Experience working with diverse groups of people (e.g. public, children, senior citizens, parents, etc.).
  • And one of the following:
  • Associate's degree in Sports and Recreation Management, Parks and Recreation Management, Physical Education, Business Administration or a closely related field.
  • Driver's License.

  • Knowledge of various sports, games, and recreational activities suitable for individuals within various age groups.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
  • Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as community civic centers, recreation centers, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of walking, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching, etc.
