Job Description
Job Responsibilities


General Responsibility


Serve in the State Law Enforcement Division's (SLED) Sex Offender Registry Department (SOR). Ensure timely, accurate, and complete information in the SLED/Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Sex Offender Registry database to ensure integrity and accuracy of the computerized files. Also help ensure SLED/CJIS complies with the federal and state laws regarding the information contained in the SC Sex Offender database.


Specific Duties
  • Position requires the ability to be on-call and work odd hours.
  • Conduct criminal history checks.
  • Ensure that the South Carolina sex offender registry data is coordinated with the NCIC National Sex Offender Registry Files.
  • Review Sex Offender Removal applications and conduct research to ensure the necessary documents and information is available to enable processing.
  • Become full-function NCIC certified within six (6) months of hire and recertify every two years.
  • Must have experience working with the Sex Offender Registry Tool (SORT), or demonstrate the ability to do so through prior experience with data entry skills or software.
  • Receive removal applications, ensure that all documents are provided and accurate.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Communicate with the Sex Offender Contacts at the County Sheriff’s Departments regarding any discrepancies in information to ensure accuracy and completeness of the files. Provide users with assistance as it pertains to the SORT database. For select counties, transfer sex offender information in the Sex Offender Registry Tool (SORT) to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR).
  • Ability to present ideas clearly, both orally and written.
  • Compose decision letters and ensure they are mailed to the applicant within applicable timeframes.
  • Must possess excellent communication and management skills.
  • Must pass a state/national fingerprint-based record background check.
  • Out-of-town travel is required on a consistent basis, with occasional overnight, to support the position's duties.
  • Review, research, and verify individual records and update as necessary any additional information as required by state and federal laws. Perform quality control of SOR records.
  • Ability to interpret reference manuals, computer printouts, and error listings.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when working with users to resolve discrepancies in information.
  • Provide detailed findings to the appropriate Solicitor's office for decision-making.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a high school diploma combined with related work experience.
  • Must have knowledge and work experience of State and Federal Laws regulating the South Carolina Sex Offender Registry (SOR), the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and the International Justice & Public Safety Network system, or the present ability to learn and master the programs.
