Job Description

The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI) provides quality rehabilitation services to those facing life-changing injuries or illnesses. We specialize in the areas of brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and complex medical conditions. RHI is the only Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System in the state of Indiana and one of only 16 in the U.S. RHI has two locations. Our facility on the northwest side of Indianapolis provides inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services to patients 15 years of age and older. Our facility on the north side of Indianapolis specializes in outpatient, interdisciplinary brain injury services for ages 15 and older as well as serves clientele with neuro and ortho-physical therapy needs and pediatric vision needs.

SUMMARY

The Radiology Technologist is responsible for producing quality radiographs utilizing knowledge of anatomic positions, equipment maneuverability and technical factors to best project the patient's unique problem. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of the rehabilitation patient aged 15 and older throughout the examination and ensures the quality of the diagnostic examination to the specifications of a radiologist. This individual will have regular clinical interactions with medical and clinical staff in performing quality radiographs, ultrasounds and MBS.

The quality of radiographs will be reviewed annually by the Medical Director of Radiology at IU Health Methodist. Understands and exhibits the principals of service excellence, leads by example, and mentors' others in the performance of their assigned duties. Additionally, understands that every employee is responsible for exhibiting exceptional customer service by answering call lights on the nursing unit and if not able to assist personally, will inform the appropriate employee regarding the patient's need.

Understands the role of employee's individual position regarding HIPAA requirements and level of access to Protected Health Information as defined in HIPAA hospital-wide policies. Understands that it is the responsibility of every RHI staff member to provide patient safety as a priority response according to RHI evidence-based practices. Encourages patients to be actively involved in their own care as patient safety strategy.

JOB DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs specific radiographic, and/or fluoroscopic procedures utilizing ionizing radiation upon the written
order of a licensed and RHI credentialed physician. Assists the physician in assigned procedures/examinations, as requested.

Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. Incorporates proper and safe patient transfer and positioning, immobilization devices, exposure re-initiation, necessary supplies and patient measurement into the procedures. Prepares the patient physically and emotionally prior to examination, administers appropriate contrast media by proper route, and questions patient prior to the examination to ensure prior preparation instructions before or after the procedure. Participates in patient teaching as appropriate for skill level. Monitors and follows up on patient distress. Transports patients safely to and from radiology. Observes and reports patient comfort and safety needs to the up-line nursing staff. Demonstrates ability to handle all types of patients at varying cognitive levels using tack, fostering self-respect and self-esteem.

Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis for body size, type of test, etc., operating equipment correctly for positioning of x-ray tube and film cassette. Accountable to provide a diagnostic quality image for interpretation. Observes patient throughout procedure to ensure secure positioning, to re-initiate exposure if patient moves. Uses appropriate technique in performing duties to avoid or minimize accidents and injury related to unsafe practice. Proactively seeks information and resources, including the Environment of Care Manual, to aid in safe performance of duties to contribute to the RHI culture of safety. Processes, delivers images for radiologist interpretation. Notifies the radiologist, and ordering physician of any, and all, discrepancies. Ensures timely interpretation of results through contracted radiologist group. Alerts ordering physician and CRNO or CEO of problems in securing interpretive results. Ensures communication of test and results with ordering physician.

Ensures the proper working order of all diagnostic equipment. Contacts service contractor to arrange preventive maintenance and unscheduled service. Maintains radiation safety records on all equipment; schedules annual inspection with Radiation Safety Officer. Performs monitoring function for radiation safety through handling and monitoring radiation film badges for all staff involved in exposed during procedures. Receives and reviews monthly film badge reports from film badge contractor; producing reports for Manager, of Facility Services. Reports any film badge discrepancies to CRNO and Radiation Safety Officer.

The incumbent completes formal ongoing competency evaluation successfully, maintains and demonstrates an acceptable level of clinical competency in the care of the adult rehabilitation population served. Participates in continuous quality improvement/ program evaluation activities and observe measures to ensure that Hospital, Joint Commission, CARF, and other quality standards and regulations are met. Assists CRNO in maintaining survey-ready environment.

PERIPHERAL JOB DUTIES

  • Cleans equipment, generator, tables, and machines on a daily basis and reports any malfunction to the appropriate person.
  • Maintains supply levels for assigned area and logs patients seen and procedures performed. QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires ability to accommodate patient condition by compromising technical factors and improvising on positioning without lowering the quality of radiographies received. Must show attention to detail and have excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, physicians and staff. Requires ability to respond to emergency situations.

EXPERIENCE

  • This position requires experience beyond the two-year training period involving direct, independent function.

SPECIAL TRAINING, LICENSURE, CREDENTIALING

  • Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology with a current Indiana license.
  • Experience with PACs system preferred. Must have CPR certification in accordance with American Heart Association Standards at time of hire and maintain current thereafter.

EDUCATION

Requires graduation from a School of Radiologic Technology approved by the Council on Education of the American Medical Association.
