Job Description

Title:

Quality Engineer (PT on call)

KBR is seeking Quality Engineers to support NASA programs. They will support the development and implementation of mission assurance requirements over the entire project life cycle. The Quality Engineers will also focus on supplier surveillance and inspections. This position will monitor processes for compliance to the developer’s procedures and contractual requirements.

We are looking for part time on call for San Diego, CA & Los Angeles, CA.

Processes to be reviewed prior to use and monitored when used may include:

Printed Circuit Board quality assessment

Workmanship including coatings

Soldering

ESD controls

Clean room activities and controls

Cable and harness fabrication

Contamination control

Parts and materials control

Control of drawings and procedures

Equipment moves (e.g. slings, cranes, and hydro sets)

Hazardous operations

Contractor responses to corrective action requests

Build records

Delivery, storage and transport of flight and non-flight hardware, and critical ground support equipment (GSE)

Responsibilities:

Ensure that flight hardware anomalies, corrective actions, and re-verifications are documented in accordance with the contractors’ non-conformance and corrective action system

Participate in production planning, review manufacturing flow plans and participate in Manufacturing and Test Readiness Reviews (MRRs and TRRs)

Examine process design and/or process qualification records, procedure review, work order review, and verifying that labs carry required certifications

Review flight hardware records and ensure all open items are identified and addressed prior to the performance of tests

Monitor contractor quality and safety controls, and participate in quality assurance activities during fabrication, integration, and tests

QAR monitoring

Support activities related to root cause corrective actions

Support processes for collecting and analyzing data that measures supplier success

Review the supplier’s CDRL documents related to quality assurance and provide recommendations

Review flight hardware records for completeness prior to integration & final acceptance testing

Perform a final instrument “buy-off” review

Complete thorough inspections

Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • General workmanship quality prior to final acceptance testing
  • 100% of solder joints prior to conformal coating of each flight printed wiring assembly prior to conformal coating.
  • GMIPS for Electronic Boards
  • Connector mates to mission hardware integrated into the spacecraft.
  • 100% of conformal coatings on flight printed wiring assemblies.
  • Pre-cap inspection of hybrid microcircuits
  • Confirm shipping packaging conforms to requirements and is adequate
  • General workmanship prior to shipment
  • Previous NASA or aerospace industry experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Final workmanship inspection prior to box level final closure prior to integration into the next level of assembly.
  • 10 + years Quality Engineering experience

Preferred Training:

IPC J-STD-001xS (Soldering, Space Addendum)

NASA-STD-8739.1 (Staking and Conformal Coating)

NASA-STD-8739.4 or IPC/WHMA-A-620xS (Crimping, Cables & Wiring)

Developer-specific ESD Control training or training traceable to ANSI/ESD S20.20 (Electrostatic Discharge)

NASA-STD-8739.6 (Workmanship Implementation Standard)1

Pre-cap inspection methods derived from MIL-STD-883

Experience with harness work on NASA projects and be able to pass NASA Workmanship classes and prove expertise executing NASA Workmanship requirements

Basic Compensation:

$57 - $78 an hour

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation.
