640lb Cheese Grader and ICP Technician


Supervisor’s Title: Laboratory Team Leader


Department: Quality


Exempt Status: Hourly


Southwest Cheese is the world’s largest manufacture of cheese/whey products and is located in Clovis, New Mexico. It is a joint venture between Glanbia and The Greater Southwest Agency and provides ample opportunity for career growth and experience in a fast-paced, high-performing enterprise.


Job Summary


Collects and grades samples from 640lb blocks after cheese reaches 7 days, holds for review any product that has grading issues, assists in in scheduled block cuttings and conducts ICP testing and records test data by performing the following duties .


Essential Functions


  • Coordinates with management to perform block cutting and product evaluations based on quality concerns and/or parameters.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)
  • Sets up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for ICP tests.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Pulls plugs from 640lb sample blocks once product reaches 7 days to evaluate and grade plugs
  • Analyzes all samples assigned on ICP
  • Utilizes GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of Southwest Cheese non-negotiables.
  • Keeps records in accordance with good manufacturing process and local and state laws.
  • Documents and reports results of tests and analyses using SAP.
  • Holds product beyond 7 days, for re-grading due to any issues

Qualifications


  • Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiply projects simultaneously.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Demonstrates experience with laboratory techniques for the measurement of chemical components, microbiological parameters, and sensory attributes.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and analytical data.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred and/or a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Practical experience in QA techniques, principles, and adherence to government regulations.

Physical Requirements


  • Involves moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product/technical nature.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceives attributes of objects and materials.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Should be able to identify and distinguish colors, see clearly at 20 inches or closer and 20 feet or more, observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.


Typical Environmental Conditions


  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts, above ground with risk of fall, or areas with risk of electrical shock.
  • May be exposed to humidity, intense heat, and areas with possible air contamination, fumes and toxic chemicals.
  • May be exposed to loud noise levels (i.e. manufacturing equipment).


Travel Requirements


  • Minimal travel limited within the local area.
