Summary

Responsible for microbiological testing, training and development of microbiological test methods for raw material and finished products at the quality laboratory. Responsible for implementing GLP/cGMP programs and procedures within the micro laboratory. Perform Sanitation Supervisor responsibilities. Assist Laboratory Coordinator and Lab Manager as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Principal Responsibilities:
  • Supervise routine microbiological testing on raw materials, in-process and finished products using compendial methods such as USP, AOAC, FDA-BAM and in-house validated methods on the automated rapid testing systems.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments about samples and project status.
  • Review analyst work and notebook, prepare final reports. Ensure that proper record is kept both in printed and electronic forms. Ensure that accurate results are reported in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Communicate with other NAI departments about samples and projects status.
  • Manage supplies and media inventory for the micro lab in collaboration with the Lab Coordinators by creating needed Purchase Requisitions Forms and formally qualifying received media and reagents.
  • Participate actively in regulatory audits (internal and external) and in remedial actions for non- compliances, and observations made in the microbiology lab.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by management.
  • Manage the qualification, validation, maintenance, and calibration programs for all equipment in the micro lab.
  • Participate in the laboratory hazardous material program.
  • Plan the daily and weekly work assignments of the microbiology analysts.
  • Review and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for compliance with cGMP.
  • Develops and implements corrective actions to support continuous improvement activities in the company.
  • Evaluate and improve lab procedure in the microbiology lab.
  • Review out-of-specification (OOS) results, lead OOS investigations and prepare out-of- specification (OOS) investigation reports.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the QC Microbiology staff to include hiring, training, scheduling workload, evaluating competency, mentoring, disciplining.
  • Review staff performance, address deficiencies, and perform conference reports (verbal and written), and annual performance reviews.
  • Oversee a proficiency testing program to monitor the efficacy of the training program.
  • Manage the training program for microbiology analysts in regards to laboratory procedures, instruments and testing methodologies.
  • Ensure that adequate and up-to-date training records are kept for each analyst.
Sanitation Supervisor & Environmental Monitoring Responsibilities:
  • Plan, generate, and execute cleaning validations, as required.
  • Manage the environmental monitoring program of the company which includes viable air and surface testing, pathogen monitoring, total particulate testing, and water testing.
  • Review and approve site cleaning and sanitation plans and SOPs.
  • Oversee investigation of environmental monitoring excursions.
  • Co-ordinate with QA in managing the Allergen Program including sampling, and testing.
  • Manage the Sanitation Audit Program including performing routine Sanitation Audits for all NAI manufacturing sites, preparing and distributing audit report to the departments.
  • Review Environmental Monitoring testing data per established protocol.
  • Perform periodic EM trending, annually at minimum.

Safety responsibilities:
  • Maintain a safe, organized and clean work environment in the microbiology lab.
  • Assist in the management of NAI Blood Born Pathogen Program.
  • May act as a member of the First Responder Team.
  • May act as a QC representative to the Safety committee in rotation with the Chemistry supervisor and lab manager.

Qualifications:
  • Experience in QA/QC environment highly desirable.
  • Proven self-starter possessing the ability to complete projects and work in a team environment
  • Proven organizational skills and task management ability.
  • 6 years min. (BA/BS) or 3 years (MS) min. of microbiology experience in academia or industry.
  • BA/BS or MS degree in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, or related field.
  • Ability to work in a GLP/GMP environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

QC Lab with various analytical instruments and various lab equipment, chemicals and solvents where PPE is required (lab coat, gloves and protective glasses). Also, computer workstation and climate-controlled office environment. Will frequently enter production areas where PPE might be required to prevent or lessens exposure to airborne-borne powdered nutritional supplement substances and/or prevent manufacturing materials from contamination.
