Summary

This is an upper-level laboratory position responsible for managing and providing support to the Additive Lab relating to the preparation of additives and analytical testing of components and finished goods while maintaining standards in Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost. This role is the direct supervisor to Laboratory Analysts and Quality Analysts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinates and ensures completion of preventative maintenance work within the Additive Lab.
  • Maintains a high degree of accuracy and good technique in all laboratory procedures, including chemical assays, preparation of test solutions, mathematical calculations, and maintaining quality records.
  • Demonstrates a servant leadership and growth mindset.
  • Partners with Talent Acquisition to address staffing needs.
  • Develops understanding of techniques required to execute all analytical testing in the lab, including GC/MS, HPLC, and ICP-MS analysis, as well as perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Provides leadership in the areas of associate career development, performance coaching, and guidance.
  • Drives remediation activities relating to audit findings/CAPA’s for laboratory area.
  • Ensures lab activities comply with all government (OSHA, EPA, FDA, etc.) and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Partners with HR to engage in conflict management/resolution and related disciplinary issues.
  • Oversees and coordinates implementation of 5S program, including management of area champions and routine audits of program effectiveness.
  • Completes final reviews on laboratory documentation as needed.
  • The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for the operation and supervision of the hourly laboratory associates in support of a multiple shift manufacturing operation.
  • Ensures that laboratory analytical testing equipment is functioning in a satisfactory manner and that adequate inventory of spare parts, reagents and chemical additives are available.
  • Monitors laboratory performance to the departmental budget and assists in capital spending/management as needed.
  • Executes calibration activities of analytical equipment as outlined in laboratory calibration procedures as directed by Chemists.
  • Plans coverage needs in order to meet production schedules and project demands.
  • Assists in the execution of laboratory validations as directed by Chemists.
  • Provides the expertise to plan and implement assigned projects relating to lab operations, and assist in developing improvements within the additive mixing processes.
  • Provides traceability of materials used during process development and project activities.
  • Conducts training of laboratory individuals according to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Corporate Quality Assurance.
  • Oversees Quality Analysts in scheduling and performing special request / contract testing, as well as submits billing information for contract testing chargebacks.
  • Conducts Safety Incident Investigations when needed, completing required documentation and follow up actions.
  • Recommends and completes revisions of laboratory documents following the Document Control procedure.
  • Performs procedure validation and training according to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Corporate Quality Assurance.


SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Evaluate new and existing processes from a safety standpoint.
  • Predict and forestall the possibility of an accident and correct the condition that led to the prediction.
  • Prevent “shortcuts” by being certain that employees know the job hazards and the corrective measure for each.
  • Know the properties and hazards of the materials involved.
  • Follow up. In addition to issuing work orders, project requests, etc., check the progress frequently until results are obtained.
  • Be constantly alert to observe and correct unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Know what, where, when, and why personal protective equipment should be worn.
  • Know the process and the “why” of it.
  • Investigate reports of unsafe conditions and correct the cause.
  • Encourage suggestions for improved job methods, but stress that approval must be obtained before any changes are tried.
  • Provide and maintain a safe and healthful place to work:
  • Know the actual conditions of the operating equipment and environment.
  • Provide and maintain a safe process to follow:
  • Be alert to improve the present processes from the safety standpoint based on knowledge of materials and methods involved.
  • Maintain good housekeeping.

SUPERVISION:

  • This position has direct reports.
  • This position reports directly to the Staff Quality Scientist – Lead Chemist.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years proven chemistry laboratory experience (college laboratory experience is acceptable).
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Minimum high school diploma

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in Chemistry or science-related equivalent is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Medical Device Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP, 21CFR820) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP, 21CFR58).
  • Knowledge of laboratory instruments such as auto-titration systems, GC/MS, HPLC, and ICP-MS.

Mental Requirements

  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, having the ability to work across departmental boundaries with individuals of varying levels of authority.
  • Effective organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work without continuous/direct supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and thoroughness of record keeping.
