CLASS TITLE: EPIDEMIOLOGIST COORDINATOR GRADE: G09 DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC HEALTH FLSA STATUS: N REPORTS TO: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & COMMUNICABLE DISEASE MANAGER DATE: 8/23 JOB SUMMARY: The epidemiologist coordinator protects and promotes community health by performing disease surveillance, conducting epidemiological investigations, and monitoring and identifying disease trends and outbreaks. The epidemiologist coordinator gathers data that describes the communitys health, conducts statistical analysis of the data, provides interpretation and illustration of this data within the Health Department and to the community. May conduct statistical analysis, surveillance systems, and public health improvement. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Locates and interviews cases and their close contacts to gather information and determine facts on infections or exposures to communicable disease. Analyzes case information, interacts with health care providers, conducts computer/electronic record searches, conducts site assessments, and contacts clients by phone or in person. Collaborates with clients to gather information on an environmental risk history, or venues where the client or others may have been exposed to diseases. Maintains field supplies and complies with field safety plans. Surveils community health indicators and accesses public health data sources to assist a variety of audiences with their data needs. Assists with the maintenance of a health monitoring database for the early recognition of any clustering of events. Responsible for mortality data files and chronic disease and mental health epidemiology. Performs epidemiological and statistical analyses on a variety of data and prepares results for review. Performs population and domain-specific analyses using data sources to identify key health inequities to determine disease trends, and to detect possible clusters and/or outbreaks. Provides routine data reports to local public health partners, and maintains department protocols as well as agency reporting documents. Monitors and reports incidents of infectious diseases to local and state health agencies. Develops presentations and reports for dissemination to diverse audiences, using data to illustrate community health concerns. Disseminates results of investigations, special studies, routine surveillance, and analyses of health outcome data. May contribute analytical skills to projects related to program evaluation, performance management, and quality improvement. Describes population by race, ethnicity, culture, societal, educational, and professional backgrounds, age, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED: General Office Equipment MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position would be: Education and Experience: At least one year of related experience, including disease investigation, mitigation, and control. Bachelors degree required, or substitute with four additional years of related experience. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver's License. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, data management, and infectious disease epidemiology. Epidemiological techniques, methods, and surveillance systems, particularly as related to communicable chronic or environmentally induced diseases, or injury control. Familiarity with data management and analysis including data quality and validity. Principles of confidentiality and data privacy Statistical analysis software (SAS, Stata, SPSS, R, EpiInfo, etc); Tableau; SQL, Esri ArcGIS, (National Electronic Disease Surveillance System). Using surveillance systems to collect disease or health outcome data. Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Skills in: Collecting, managing and analyzing data. Building databases. Incorporating data from a variety of sources to create an overview of a community health issue. Conducting literature reviews and environmental scans. Questionnaire/survey design, data collection, Maintaining records, reports and charts for completeness and accuracy Coordinating deadlines, prioritizing work demands and assigning/monitoring work performed. Providing attention to detail in assignments. Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards (based on assignment). Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines. Communicating effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to: Use both quantitative and qualitative data to describe health issues. Apply principles of good ethical/legal practice as they relate to study design and data collection, dissemination, and use. Handle multi-faceted tasks, changing priorities, ambiguity, and complexity. Demonstrate excellent organizational skill and a high level of accuracy. Work both cooperatively within a team and independently. Research, analyze, and evaluate programs, policies, and procedures. Develop and maintain positive, professional, productive relationships. Keep accurate and complete records and be a good steward of data, including the maintenance of sensitive and confidential client records information.
