Job Description
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT ASSOCIATE


OVERVIEW: Working as part of the Public Engagement team, this position supports and furthers the museum’s efforts to connect with communities through the coordination of public programs, community partnerships, and art resources. A particular focus for these efforts is on the museum’s newly promised collection of Alexander Calder works in the Shirley Family Collection. This is a one year position with possibility of renewal.

REPORTS TO: Deputy Director of Education & Public Engagement


COMPENSATION: $23.17-$27.81 hourly pay range; 40 hours per week


BENEFITS: Full time employees are covered by medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance/LTD/AD&D. Employees are able to enroll in our company’s 403b plan. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Public Programming:


Organize and execute public programs (in-person and virtual) related to the Shirley Family Collection of works by Alexander Calder..


Along with members of the public engagement team, plan and coordinate programs, including events related to SAM’s collection - with an emphasis on the Shirley Family Collection- as well as exhibitions at all three locations.


Recruit, schedule, and supervise teaching artists, temporary staff, and event volunteers working with public programs.


Provide logistical and administrative support for programs.


Community Engagement and Partnerships:


Cultivate relationships with local organizations and cultural workers to build partnerships; serve as point person for community partnership inquiries and communications associated with the Shirley Family Collection and the broader museum, including management of the community pass program.


Develop outreach and programming strategy related to the Shirley Family Collection among non-profit partners, artists, and educational entities.


Administration:


Coordinate program details with the museum’s operations staff including security, AV, facilities, and catering.


Prepare budgets, contracts, grants, invoices, credit card tracking, and other reports that support public programs.


Collaborate with Marketing and other departments on promotional activities related to public engagement programs. Write copy, assist in editing and proofreading, submit request forms for communications.


Work with the public engagement team to compile and analyze statistics on attendance, revenue, and expense for divisional records and reports.


Assume other responsibilities as requested or as needed by the museum.


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


BA preferred in art administration, art education, art history, education, nonprofit leadership, or related field or the equivalent combination of education/experience.


Demonstrated interest in local, contemporary artist communities including performance, music, literary, and visual art; some knowledge of the work of Alexander Calder.


Familiarity with neighborhoods, communities, and relevant organizations (both public and private) in the Pacific Northwest.


Demonstrated commitment to racial equity work.


1-3 years of programming experience in an arts organization or related cultural organization preferred.


Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and over the phone.


Experience with project management, program development and administration; budget development and management.


Demonstrated proficiency with and accuracy in using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access and other related software applications.


Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team; flexible, responsive, and communicative when working across teams and organizations.


Ability to assess priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure; excellent time management, problem-solving, and analytic skills.


Maintain work schedule that includes evening and weekend hours, as necessary.


Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.


Ability to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


Exposure: Position requires some evening, early morning, and weekend work to participate in Museum programs and activities. Work areas range from indoor climate-controlled environments with light background noise to outdoor noisy non-climate controlled spaces.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Stationary Work: Approximately 50% of time is spent stationary while working at a desk. Balance of time (approximately 50%) is spent moving around the work area, the galleries, and around the city. Occasional extended periods of standing may be required when assisting at Museum events.


Communication: Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.


Moving: The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving files, equipment, and supplies. Must be able to regularly position self to access files.


Office Work: Ability to effectively and regularly operate a computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.
