State Hospital South (SHS) is seeking Psychiatric Technician Trainees (PTT) who are caring, empathetic, and focused on providing the best quality of life possible for every patient. SHS is in beautiful Southeast Idaho, an area best known for Oregon Trail and Native American history, amazing fly fishing, towering mountain peaks with abundant wildlife and awe-inspiring geological sites.

State Hospital South Syringa Chalet Nursing Facility (SCNF), located in Blackfoot, is a skilled nursing facility that provides care for up to 42 residents who have a history of behavioral or psychiatric illness. Our mission is to provide quality services in a safe home-like environment to assure that each resident can attain or maintain his/her highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being according to diversity of needs, interests, and abilities.

POSITION INFORMATION:

  • Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, day, evening, and night shifts (swing or night shifts include 5% shift pay).
  • This is a trainee-level position. When training is satisfactorily completed, the employee may be eligible for promotion to Psychiatric Technician.

This announcement may be used to fill permanent, temporary, full-time, and/or part-time positions. Temporary positions are limited to working 1,385 hours in a 12-month period for any one state agency. Employees are eligible for benefits if they work twenty (20) hours or more per week and the term of employment is expected to exceed five (5) continuous months.


Psychiatric Technician Trainees in temporary positions start at $15.00/hour. Psychiatric Technician Trainees in a temporary position with a CNA start at $15.50/hour. Psychiatric Technicians in classified positions start out at $18.85/hour.

This is an ongoing announcement which means at the time applicants apply, we may or may not have an opening. Those applicants that take and pass the exam to show they meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the referral list. When a position becomes available, the hiring supervisor will then directly contact those applicants they wish to interview off the referral list.

The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare is a drug-free workplace. Any applicant offered employment in this position, will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test. In addition, the applicant will be required to complete and pass a criminal history background investigation after a conditional offer of employment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Maintain the safety of patients/residents, including involvement in emergencies such as fire evacuations.
  • Identify and report changes in patients/residents’ behavior and health.
  • Take, record, and report vital signs, sleep patterns, and diet patterns.
  • Engage in physical activities (exercise and sports) with patients/residents for up to an hour at a time.
  • Provide group and/or individual services in psychosocial treatment, disturbed behavior management, record keeping, environmental management, and patient care.
  • Maintain patients/residents progress records.
  • Provide personal care for patients.
  • Interact with patients/residents to encourage appropriate behavior and to control aggressive behavior.
  • Intervene in crisis or potentially harmful situations by using specific early intervention techniques and/or physical restraining techniques.
  • Monitor and assess safety and security of clients and facilities within their environment and take action in crisis situations.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as fire evacuation or the administration of first aid and/or CPR.
  • Lift and transfer patients/residents; lift and carry items weighing approximately 50 pounds.
  • Watch for and take action to prevent safety hazards.
  • Maintain the environment by performing basic housekeeping duties.
  • Assist and/or support unsteady ambulatory adults of varying weights.
  • Interact with patients/residents to provide social skills training in areas such as: social interaction; leisure time activity; planning and decision making; and money management.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. Please make sure your resume or work history supports your meeting the minimum qualifications for this position. Failure to do this may disqualify you from being considered for this position.

  • Requires possession of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate.
  • At least six months of experience following written and oral instructions.
  • Experience reading and writing English-ability to read and write in English.
  • Some knowledge of personal hygiene and first aid-or willing to learn how to perform these functions.
