This is a project position with an on-going funding agreement anticipated with the Office of Independent Investigations.

The Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory Division is to provide high quality forensic science services and training for Washington’s criminal justice agencies that enhances public safety for the citizens of Washington.

Duties

The Forensic Scientist interacts with various staff to include but not limited to forensic scientists, the laboratory managers, administrative staff, representatives of criminal justice agencies, and the general public. Work priorities are established through interactions with management, criminal justice agencies, prosecutors, and the capabilities and workload of the scientist.
This position has been designated as “in-training”; as such WSP will consider filling this position at the Forensic Scientist 3, Forensic Scientist 2, or Forensic Scientist 1 level. The salary range will depend upon which level the position is filled and the qualifications of the successful candidate.


Forensic Scientist 1
Salary Range
$4,541 - $6,105
No technical experience in a forensic laboratory is required.

Forensic Scientist 2
Salary Range
$5,013 - $6,746
One year of technical experience in a forensic laboratory performing analysis of physical evidence.

Forensic Scientist 3
Salary Range
$6,105 - $8,216
Three years of technical experience in a forensic laboratory performing analysis of physical evidence, which includes testifying as an expert witness in courts of law.


Our new teammate will be able to:
  • Testify in a court of law presenting findings to a jury in a manner that is designed to be readily understood.
  • Interprets and reaches scientific conclusions, supported by their data and observations.
  • Learns and applies laws, policies, and procedures, as specified in the RCW, the WAC and federal regulations as they relate to scientific examination of evidence.
  • Documents and protects evidence in accordance laboratory procedures, ensuring that the chain of custody is maintained.
  • Respond to requests for assistance at crime scenes.
  • Analyze evidence and complex casework.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License.
  • Bachelors or an advanced degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or forensic science from an accredited institution.
  • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
