Pay Range

$123,960- $166,992 annually for the SES.2 level

$148,650 - $200,328 annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

We have an opening for a Process Engineer on the Target Fabrication team. This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world’s most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022, a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.

Under limited direction, this position involves aligning engineering and production efforts in NIF target assembly. You will identify production issues, develop and implement solutions. You will help the team maintain high product quality and product yield while ensuring optimal use of resources and adherences to best safety practices. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Support the development and fielding of new equipment and broadly defined processes.
  • Use independent judgement in determining methods and techniques for writing and updating programs for robots, automated microscopes, data acquisition systems, and optical coordinate measuring machines.
  • Contribute to the project goals by working to improve production rates, efficiencies, and yields.
  • Provide real time solutions to production problems of moderate complexity and provide engineering guidance until the problems are resolved.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Interact with inter-organizational contacts such as the Target Engineering and Production teams to support and enrich target design and assembly by writing and processing protocols, testing components, and providing recommendations to make processes more effective and efficient.
  • Function as a team member to perform development testing for various scientific and engineering working groups.
  • Implement manufacturing principles like 5S, Lean Manufacturing, SPC and 6Sigma.
  • Interact with customers to ensure product meets set quality standards and work with vendors to provide hardware and software per contract.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level

  • Prioritize and balance the workload of multiple project assignments while selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on in-depth analysis of factors that may not be well defined.
  • Collaborate within a team consisting of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, coordinators, and procurement personnel to resolve complex problems.
  • Provide direction to small teams and work as a primary contact on multi-disciplinary teams while also serving on internal technical/advisory committees.

Qualifications

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment.
  • Experience with programming languages: visual basic, excel macros, LabVIEW, MATLAB or equivalent.
  • Experience with process improvement methodologies like SPC/Model Base Problem Solving and a drive for continuous improvements.
  • Comprehensive experience supporting a production or manufacturing line.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and theory with technical experience needed for problem solving while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline (preferably Industrial or Mechanical), or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Broad experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

  • Ability to lead independent work and mentor others with on-the-job training.
  • Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities including working well under pressure, managing competing demands and meeting tight deadlines with strong follow through.
  • Significant experience identifying, defining, and solving complex multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost-effective manner.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience troubleshooting computer systems.
  • Detail-oriented, works well in a fast-paced environment, and a strong sense of urgency and drive to succeed.
  • Experience working within the protocols of a class 100 cleanroom.
  • Master’s degree in an Engineering discipline or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Strong data analysis or metrology background

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
