Job Description
Nammo Defense Systems Inc., a defense contractor, manufactures and supports shoulder-fired systems; energetic material solutions such as aircraft emergency escape systems, actuation devices, rocket motors, warheads, medium & large caliber ammunitions, mortar ammunition; and composite solutions including carbon fiber tubes and composite aero-structures.


Position Summary


The Composite Propellant Process Engineer is a technical expert responsible for overseeing the manufacturing process of composite propellant. They play a crucial role in determining the necessary steps to manufacture propellant and propellant-loaded devices, such as rocket motors and gas generators, while ensuring they meet engineering requirements. This position collaborates with various departments, including Program Management, Supply Chain, Operations, Research and Development, and Product Engineering, to ensure the success of the products. The Process Engineer contributes to the development of manufacturing processes for new products and provides support for existing production processes. They serve as the technical owner of the production process, encompassing chemical processing, equipment requirements, work instructions, tooling design, and facility design.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Serve as Principal Investigator on both internal and external funded programs, taking ownership of research and development projects.
  • Deliver oral presentations summarizing progress on selected projects and programs to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Utilize safety equipment, such as respirators or self-contained breathing apparatus, as required.
  • Apply engineering principles to safely process propellants, pyrotechnics, and/or explosives for product development or improvement, ensuring compliance with program requirements.
  • Adhere to standard practices and safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Provide training to operators, reviewing and evaluating the outcomes of experiments and analyses performed.
  • Occasionally exert up to 50 lbs. of force during the course of regular duties.
  • Estimate labor, equipment, and material requirements for production work supporting development projects.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports that document the progression of work and present results achieved.
  • Coordinate and schedule support work with other departments to ensure seamless operations.
  • Develop new tooling, processes, and techniques to enhance manufacturing capabilities and efficiency.


Required Experience & Skills


  • Strong aptitude in chemical science areas overlapping polymers, analytical measurements and physical properties.
  • Displays discipline and commitment to achieving goals, maintaining a strong work ethic.
  • Exhibits a high level of learnability, continuously seeking knowledge and embracing new concepts and technologies.
  • Minimum four years’ experience with propellants, pyrotechnics and/or explosives.
  • Exhibits resourcefulness, finding creative solutions to problems and effectively utilizing available resources.
  • Demonstrates perseverance, adaptability, and the ability to switch tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates authenticity, remaining true to oneself and displaying genuine interactions with others.
  • Shows initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement and taking proactive measures.
  • Ability to obtain approval through ATF to handle Nammo products and information.
  • A working knowledge of energetic material regulations and safe handling/measurement.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Upholds integrity and ethical standards in all aspects of their work.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and requirements for composite propellant and propellant-loaded devices.
  • Familiarity with Program Management, Supply Chain, Operations, Research and Development, and Product Engineering processes.
  • Approaches challenges with an open mind, welcoming diverse perspectives and ideas.
  • Takes accountability for their actions, consistently delivering results and owning up to mistakes.
  • Extensive experience in process engineering, preferably in composite propellant manufacturing or a related industry.
