Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to provide supervision of offenders in the community on probation and parole designated to the Sex Offender Unit. Primary responsibilities of this position Include office
reporting, field contacts, random drug testing, ensuring compliance with orders of the court and/or parole board, and monitoring GPS equipment and compliance. This position will include assessing individuals and creating Individualized treatment plans, documenting progress/lack of progress and writing reports to the respective court and/or parole board. This position will include dealing with possible arrests for violations incurred and/or compliance incentives for progress towards identified supervision goals. This position is a Probation Parole Officer II position in which high risk, violent offenders, gang members, etc. are supervised under this specialized caseload. Community Supervision is also utilized under this type of caseload as well per the directives and policies of the New Mexico Corrections Department.
How does it get done?
Position will supervise high risk, high needs, high profile, and specialized-circumstance offenders following sentencing by Judicial Authorities and/or Parole Board often utilizing the Community Supervision Model.

High risk/high needs offenders placed on Probation and/or Parole supervision by the Court and/or Parole Board.
Ideal Candidate
- Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) offender electronic monitoring system
- Motivational Interviewing technique specific to the adult felony population
- Utilizing assessment tools for supervision of adult felony offenders
Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification and two (2) years of experience as a Probation and Parole Officer I, commissioned or non-commissioned law enforcement officer, to include behavioral case management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience in behavioral case management, commissioned or non-commissioned law enforcement, military law enforcement or as a Probation & Parole Officer totaling four (4) years, OR two (2) years as an Adult Correctional Officer including two (2) years in behavioral case management, will substitute for the required education.

Statutory Requirements:
Assignment as a Probation Parole Officer at NMCD must adhere to the following:
- Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony or any crime of moral turpitude in the courts of this or any other state or in the federal courts.
- Maintenance of skills in self-defense, handcuffing, baton, and chemical agents and annual re-certification.
- At the time of their appointment, be citizens of the United States.
- Subject to a drug test as a condition of employment and on-going random drug testing as a condition of assignment to a safety sensitive position.
- At the time of their appointment, have reached the age of majority.
- Successful completion of the New Mexico Department Of Corrections Basic Probation and Parole Officers Certification Training within twelve months of hire and annual re-certification.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates. May be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
