Job Description

The EPDM Research and Innovation team consists of scientists that are responsible for developing breakthrough technologies in support of CCM’s current and future needs in the EPDM roofing business. The research scientist will work closely with value chain partners, commercial leadership, and technical leadership to support current business and influence technology development to enable the next generation of sustainable EPDM roofing membrane.


This position provides an excellent opportunity for an individual to contribute innovative technology and product solutions to deliver growth for the EPDM roofing product line and market. The successful candidate in this position will become an expert in rubber compounding, rubber processing and development of commercial roofing products. The EPDM Scientist will lead major innovation and new product development projects within the Research and Innovation group. This position operates under the general guidance of the EPDM R&D Manager.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leading multiple Innovation and New Product Development projects critical to support and grow the EPDM roofing business.
  • Publish technical reports, conduct technical presentations, and champion safety
  • Utilizing advance material characterization techniques to establish structure property relationships of polymer materials.
  • Leading research activities on new and existing products as well as identifying and implementing new technologies within the EPDM business group.
  • Managing the technical projects from ideation through scale up to commercialization.
  • Supporting the EPDM roofing business through new product development, processing and performance improvement, raw material qualification and cost reduction projects.
  • Collaborating with sales, marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, warranty departments and CCM staff on defined project priorities, project scope and future development directions.


General knowledge/skills:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of the physical, chemical, and mechanical behavior of the thermoplastic polymers
  • Training or experience on the design of experiments, especially as applied to development of chemical formulations
  • Knowledge to analyze data, understand structure property relationships of polymers and conduct relative testing and evaluations
  • Project management skills in a cross functional environment
  • Experience in the development of rubber products and their associated processing technologies such as mixing, extrusion and calendaring are a plus
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s in Polymer Science and Engineering or Material Science & Engineering
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Experience with FTIR, DSC, TGA and rheology analysis of polymers
