Job Description
Position Overview
Old Sturbridge Academy is seeking a culturally competent, dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Principal of a k - 8 EL Education School. The successful candidate will possess extensive EL Education Leadership, School Administration knowledge and experience working in a Middle School. As an instructional leader, the Principal will drive outstanding student outcomes by developing and implementing a shared vision for excellence in teaching and learning. The successful candidate will possess experience working in diverse schools with families of English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and a passion for program development set at a living history museum. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Old Sturbridge Village Leadership team. Experience mentoring and coaching faculty as well as planning and leading professional development is preferred. Mission
Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School will provide K-8 students with rigorous, real world learning experiences in a supportive and nurturing school community, helping all students to become reflective inquisitors, articulate communicators, critical thinkers, and skilled problem solvers. Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School, an EL Education (formerly known as Expeditionary Learning) school working in partnership with Old Sturbridge Village, will foster a learning environment that represents all aspects of the diversity spectrum where our students will meet or exceed grade-level expectations in all subject areas.
About The School
Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School opened in 2017 and will serve 360 students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade during the 2023-2024 school year. There are 40 students in each grade level. We believe in hands-on learning that focuses on three levels of student achievement: mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work. Our school's habits of character, which define our culture, are courage, collaboration, stewardship, perseverance, and high-quality work.
Qualifications
  • Acute attention to detail and project completion
  • Sheltered English Immersion - Administrator endorsement
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Out of School Programming (Athletics, Extracurricular activities and Summer Programming)
  • Master's degree and valid Principal/Assistant Principal license
  • Proven ability to prioritize, balance, and complete complex projects in the face of competing deadlines
  • Experience with teacher evaluation/performance management and leading professional development
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining faculty and staff from diverse communities and underrepresented groups .
  • Strong partnership-building skills
  • Extensive EL Education Leadership experience with staff management including, but not limited to the hiring, evaluation, and development of teaching faculty, using the EL School model
  • Minimum of five years' teaching experience including, but not limited to: knowledge of curriculum, instructional practice, student learning styles, and student assessments
  • Administrative skills, including organizational, operational, and fiscal experience
  • Ability of a person to effectively interact, work, and develop meaningful relationships with people of various cultural backgrounds
  • Proven track record of Engaging Parents
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Strong and tested ability to develop excellent teams and participate effectively on teams; a collaborative management style
Responsibilities
  • Promote the development, implementation, attainment, and reporting of specific and measurable goals for student achievement
  • Recruit, select and manage a diverse staff
  • Implement professional development programs consistent with teachers' instructional goals and students' learning needs
  • Represent the school to the local and broader communities
  • Maintain effective discipline and foster a safe learning environment
  • Encourage and initiate continued improvement of teaching practice and curriculum in coordination with coaches and teaching faculty
  • Implement strategic or school improvement plan using data to drive curriculum and instruction
  • Supervise the alignment, coordination and delivery of instruction, curricula and programming across grade levels and content areas
  • Foster a culture of excellence, characterized by high levels of transparency, shared leadership, collaboration, organization and efficiency
  • Build relationships and collaborate with organizations and groups that represent the diversity of the school community.
  • Model, promote and sustain a culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Develop an effective plan for allocation of fiscal resources, including planning and submitting annual school budgets
  • Promote an educational philosophy and school climate that encourages collaboration and teamwork on the part of all teachers and students
  • Monitor and report on state and federal requirements
  • Promote effective communications and interpersonal relations among staff, parents, students and community members
  • Mentor, support, and evaluate educators and staff
  • Employ a variety of processes for gathering, analyzing and using data for administrative decision-making and teaching practice
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate and timely student and teacher records for reference and reporting
  • Identify intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs affecting students' success in school, and take steps to direct and coordinate the efforts of partner organizations, teachers and parents with services, as necessary
