Job Description

The 3rdis a Howard County based non profit supporting WOC entrepreneurs. In addition to a dynamic membership, The 3rd runs its Community Coworking and Cafe in Downtown Columbia. This space is open to the entire community. It is a home away from home where guests can meet a friend for a coffee, book a conference room, or grab a meal to go, all while supporting local WOC owned businesses.


Food is an integral piece to The 3rd's space. Our kitchen provides breakfast and lunch, featuring homemade muffins, juices, and wraps.


The 3rd is a non profit startup and we are looking for team members who have a drive to learn new things, enjoy a fast paced environment, and are interested in being a part of building a fast growing, impactful organization.


Prep/Line Cooks perform various food preparation, cooking and cleaning tasks to ensure the kitchen remains efficient in creating and delivering dishes for patrons. Prepares food using recipes and menu items created by the Head Chef and helps keep the kitchen running smoothly. Some of their key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Plating prepared foods based on senior chef’s guidance
  • Assisting with stocking and setting up the kitchen stations
  • Completing all tasks, in order, on the prep list from the Head Chef or other kitchen manager
  • Parboiling food, reducing sauces and starting first steps in various dishes
  • Cleaning dishes, washing cooking utensils and cookware, taking out the trash and sanitizing kitchen
  • Keeping track of ingredient inventory and collaborating with other kitchen and management staff to order resupply
  • Measuring quantities of seasonings and other cooking ingredients
  • Adhering to all relevant nutrition and sanitary regulations and standards
  • Ensuring that the kitchen operation procedures and hygiene meet food safety standards and regulations
  • Preparing food including cleaning and cutting the ingredients and cooking main dishes, desserts, appetizers and snacks
  • Washing, chopping and sorting ingredients like fruits, vegetables and meats


Prep/Line Cook skills and qualifications:


  • Strong sense of smell and taste
  • Great collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Good math skills with a clear understanding of cooking measurements
  • At least one year of cooking experience
  • Effective communication skills
  • Excellent kitchen administration knowledge and ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to work on your feet for most of the day and lift 30 pounds at a time
  • Familiarity with safe and sanitary food handling and preparation
  • Excellent organizational, time management and multitasking skills
  • Strong organization and active listening skills
  • Superior dexterity skills to operate cutting tools quickly and safely
  • Keen understanding of industry-standard best cooking and preparation practices
