Job Summary


Make an impact:


The Police Crime Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of complex, technical and specialized public safety support duties specific to the Crime Laboratory. The focus will be to provide general support to the Crime Laboratory as well as act as a liaison between the crime lab, other agencies, the courts, and internal staff regarding evidence and lab processes.

What You Will Do


Office Tasks: Correspondence via email, telephone, and in person to sworn and civilian personnel and external customers, regarding evidence submissions. Answer phones, address questions, and/or route calls as appropriate. Assist with lab supply orders by receipting and inventorying them. File, maintain, and manage case folders/archives. Able to explain complex policies and procedures over the phone, while diffusing difficult conversations.


Lab Assistance: Functions will include lab safety, lab cleanliness, preparation of manuals, maintenance of manuals, accreditation document monitoring, receiving/distribution of evidence/mail, calibrating evidence with case numbers, evidence processing with Criminalist, maintain lab database (consumables, logs, evidence processing), test firing weapons for shell casing analysis, and image calibration for latent print images.


In-the-Field: Take notes of evidence located, assist in packaging and logging of evidence, package/transport/dispose of hazardous materials, operate the Crime Lab vehicle and respond to crime, be available for callouts to assist Criminalists with crime scene, and collection of fingerprints from deceased person.


Court Preparation: Assist with court preparation and assist evidence technicians with evidence views. Some preparation of evidence for analysis by the technicians. Being present and assisting with the evidence collection of National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) evidence.


Computer Management: Work with the department’s record management systems, Mark43, Evidence on Q, and Crime Lab on Q.


Character: Certain aspects of work assignments can result in significant legal ramifications if not performed properly, so the employee is expected to demonstrate a high degree of professional and moral integrity and use independent judgment to organize and implement duties according to established procedures. Confidently and accurately testify in court proceedings regarding the chain of custody, evidence collection and processing.

What are the minimum qualifications?


  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem’s driving standards.
  • Must pass the pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
  • High school degree or G.E.D. certificate, and training or work experience in police/community assistance, mediation skills or social work, providing the ability to deal with individuals and groups with understanding, tact, and courtesy, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
What are the preferred qualifications?


  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess an Associate degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Quantitative Analysis, or related field.
  • Must have two years of college with coursework in at least two of the following: life or physical science, forensics, data processing, or photography; and one year experience in a photographic or forensic laboratory, or related experience.
