JOB SUMMARY

  • This position performs technical duties in the processing, storage, and recording of forensic evidence and property.


MAJOR DUTIES

  • Testifies in court to validate chain-of-custody.
  • Monitors all evidence transactions.
  • Performs related duties.
  • Maintains evidence vault and other evidence storage areas.
  • Process lab requests and processes lab returns.
  • Provides evidentiary copies of evidence to investigators, court prosecutors, and defense attorneys when requested.
  • Maintains related files and records.
  • Receives, records, labels, and stores property and evidence; ensures that proper chain-of-custody procedures are followed; maintains inventory and record of all evidence processes.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of chain-of-custody laws.
  • Knowledge of the preservation and documentation of physical evidence.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge the laws criminal evidence.
  • Skill in the storage and processing of evidence.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Knowledge of evidence storage and security principles and procedures.
  • Skill in the maintenance of files and records.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The purpose of this position is to process and store evidence and property. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective evaluation of criminal evidence.
  • The work consists of related technical duties in the maintenance of evidence and property. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and climbs ladders.
  • The work is performed in an office, stockroom, or warehouse. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a current certification in Evidence Management from the International Association for Property & Evidence (IAPE) or have completed the IAPE certification within one year of appointment to this position.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
