Job Description


This Police Evidence Specialist is a non-sworn clerical and manual position providing custodial control and maintenance of security for physical evidence and other properties in the possession of the Raleigh Police Department. Work includes the receipt, storage, control, and custody of all police evidence/found property and is reviewed through records, inventories, and observation of the efficiency and quality of work. The ideal candidate will possess independent judgment and initiative in following work directives assigned by the department.
Work Hours:
This position works from Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and is part of a rotating on-call schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Catalogs, receives, conducts inventory, and stores evidence and found property and maintains associated records, including but not limited to currency, firearms, and narcotics.
  • Renders assistance to the public in recovering stored property.
  • Presents evidence and testifies in court trials as required.
  • Checks evidence in and out of controlled area to officers for court and investigations and maintains custody files related to this process. Transports evidence and found property from district stations to central evidence locations while maintaining constant control of chain of custody.
  • Disposes of evidence and deletes items from the computer according to procedures as directed by court order or other legal authority.
  • Acts as liaison with Law Enforcement Agencies, such as the United States Secret Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, FBI, CCBI, SBI, DA’s Office and North Carolina Department of Revenue for evidence related matters.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience in inventory control, property management, operating office equipment, and maintaining files and records.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:

  • DCI certification, or the ability to obtain this certification (Training provided by City of Raleigh).
  • Property and Evidence Management (Training provided by City of Raleigh).
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Additional Information

Knowledge of:

  • Typing, and computer record keeping relative to inventory control.
  • Inventory procedures and record keeping.
  • Inventory or inventory experience.
Skill In:
  • Operating computer information terminals, computer applications and files systems.
  • Maintaining accurate records for inventory control.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other departmental employees.
ADA and Other Requirements
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, lifting, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed primarily in indoor environments and involves the required use of eye production, safety shoes, hearing protection, and hand protection.
