The City of North Las Vegas is excited to announce a continuous (ongoing) recruitment for the position of Police Communications Dispatcher! Candidates will be notified of their status at various times throughout the recruitment process. Please thoroughly review the information and selection process outlined on this announcement. This posting will close September 1, 2023, or earlier depending on operational needs.

NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES: Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, non-probationary employees successfully completing the qualification assessment process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to one hundred and twenty (120) days.

Part-time/temporary employees and external candidates may apply for this recruitment. Part-time/temporary employees and external candidates who successfully complete the qualification assessment process will be placed on an external list, which may be used to fill vacancies, after the appropriate recruitment section of the collective bargaining agreement has been followed. IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

  • Pay considerations - The starting hourly pay for this position is $28.05 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range, no exceptions. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.

  • Shift work required - This position supports an operation that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must be able to work any shift (days, swings, or graveyard), and any day of the week, to include weekends, holidays, and overtime. Currently, the schedule consists of 10-hour shifts and are divided into two squads with days off being Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  • Any domestic violence conviction.
  • Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
  • Background and Disqualifiers – Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background check. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors –
    • Any felony conviction.
    • Any domestic violence conviction.
    • Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.

  • Any felony conviction.
  • Must successfully complete training program - The training program lasts approximately 8 months and assigned shifts will rotate throughout the training program. Employees will be required to learn, memorize, and apply material, including self-study of material. Employees will be evaluated on a daily basis.

THE ROLE

Police Communications Dispatchers are an integral part of the North Las Vegas Police Department. When someone calls for help, the dispatcher’s voice is the first one they hear. Police Communications Dispatchers perform a variety of complex police dispatching duties that includes the following: receives, screens, prioritizes emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls; dispatches police patrol units, detectives, SWAT, K9, CSI, Animal Protection Services, Parking Enforcement, etc.; documents calls for service and officer activity into a computer-aided dispatch system; queries and enters into criminal history data bases; maintains confidentiality; demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and empathy.

Education and Experience:

  • Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of law enforcement emergency response training and/or experience using a multi-line telephone system and/or a two-way radio system. Possesses the ability to speak Spanish fluently.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED at the time of hire into the position.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record, and the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
  • NCIC Certification within six months of hire/reclassification and be recertified as required.
  • Typing Certificate confirming Typing 45 accurate net words per minute. (Certificate dated no less than one (1) year from application/transfer date.)

SELECTION PROCESS

1. Typing Test (Pass/Fail)

Must be able to type 45 accurate net words per minute. The typing test will be provided by the department via CritiCall. In order to move on to the next step in the selection process candidates must pass the typing test.

2. CritiCall Test (Ranked based on scores: Overall Data Entry - 3436 keystrokes per hour, and Non-Data Entry - 68%)

Once the application and other supporting documentation have been reviewed and it has been determined that the minimum qualifications have been met, an invitation to take the CritiCall Test may be sent. The invitation and testing instructions will be sent to the email provided on the application. The CritiCall Test is a computer-based test that is used for the Police Communications Dispatcher position. The test measures job-related skills that are necessary for this position. The CritiCall Test modules include:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Character Comparison
  • Prioritization
  • Memory Recall
  • Personality Test
  • Spelling
  • Map Reading
  • Decision Making
  • Call Summarization
  • Data Entry
  • Cross Referencing
  • Sentence Clarity

Candidates must achieve the required minimum score determined by the Department using a validation process. Allow 2-3 hours to complete the test. Those successfully completing the CritiCall Test, may be called for an interview. The North Las Vegas Police Department reserves the right to modify the selection processes and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards.

3. Oral board interview with performance exercise (Pass/Fail)

Top qualifying candidates will then be invited to an oral interview, by appointment only. During the interview process, a performance exam will be administered.

4. Background Investigation

Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process.

Candidates for this position are subject to pre-employment screenings and employment is contingent upon these results.
