Department Overview

The Children's Emergency departments, located in Minneapolis and St. Paul, are staffed 24 hours-a-day by board-eligible or board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and by nurses with specialized education in pediatric emergency medicine. Each facility is designed to support short-stay needs, coordinate pediatric and neonatal care transport, assault and abuse services, access to pediatric specialists, and emergency telephone consultation and referral. In addition, Child Life staff, trained in child development, help children prepare for procedures and deal with anxiety.

ED nurse practitioners require strong clinical and interpersonal skills while practicing alongside Pediatric Emergency physicians and within a multidisciplinary team on several clinical sites including Children’s main campuses (Minneapolis and St Paul) and Children’s MN Satellite Urgent Care/ED at Allina WestHealth in Plymouth, MN. ED PNPs provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral and health education as it relates to physical, emotional, spiritual, neurological, behavioral and/or psychiatric issues for infants and children in these 3 emergent/acute care settings.


Masters degree (or higher) in nursing, current MN RN and APRN license (or eligibility), pediatric nurse practitioner certification required.BLS required. PALS required within 3 months of hire. Pediatric ED or PICU experience preferred
