The Physical Substation Designer is located at 720 E. Butterfield Road, Suite 200, Lombard, IL 60148.


Primary Function: As a member of a project team, the Physical Substation Designer performs routine design assignments, which require knowledge and skill in basic deign techniques and procedures, under limited supervision. Knowledge of physical substation layout and electrical or civil fundaments is required. Successful candidates may be placed in a Designer I, II or III title depending on skill and experience level.


Duties & Responsibilities: Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:


  • May be called upon to calculate ground grid requirements to IEEE standards using task-specific software
  • Complete work in pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules
  • May be called upon to calculate structure heights and weights, concrete volumes, equipment fit-up, or other basic tasks
  • Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments
  • Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party
  • Produce conduit & Grounding drawings
  • Must be able to work extensive overtime at certain times
  • Produce new drawings from examples of previous project and/or standards
  • Other duties as required
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work
  • Learn and apply corporate standard engineering practices
  • Learn and us task-specific software, including the document management system
  • Research information in catalogs, specifications, corporate standards, or other reference material
  • Calculate cable lengths, conduit fill, or other basic tasks
  • Produce High Voltage substation layouts & elevation drawings from a one-line electrical drawing
  • Create Substation Bill of Materials, including manufacturer part numbers, quantities, footage, etc.
  • Oversee project-specific activities of drafters and more junior designers


Minimum Qualifications / Experience


A minimum of five years experience in physical substation design, or related experience, is required. An Associate's degree in draf ting & design is preferred. Successful candidates with more than five years of experience may be placed in more senior level designer titles depending on skill.


  • Mathematics, including algebra and basic trigonometry
  • Strong knowledge of the major components of substations and the types of drawings required to construct an electrical substation
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to produce steel drawings is a plus
  • Strong knowledge physical substation layout, elevations, grounding, foundations, and conduit
  • Extensive knowledge of CADD programs such as AutoCAD
  • Strong knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards (NESC, and applicable IEEE, ANSI, AISC, and ACI) is a plus
  • Strong knowledge and proven experience creating the bill of materials as it relates to a substation
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information to team members, management and clients when necessary
  • General knowledge of control circuits and ground grid theory & design
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft office products including Word, Excel and Outlook
