Essential Duties

  • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory by using centrifuge to spin blood.
  • Labels specimens for identification purposes.
  • Greets patients and instructs them in correct specimen collection methods.
  • Inventories medical laboratory supplies; stocks work area as needed.
  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly.
  • Collects urine specimens.
  • Obtains blood specimens from patients by venipuncture.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a recognized phlebotomist program.

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of a phlebotomist training program and one (1) year experience in drawing blood specimens; OR any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Strong preference for phlebotomists who are bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Shifts are in the morning for about 4-5 hours beginning at 7:00 to 8:00 am.
  • We seek phlebotomists with strong interpersonal skills who have demonstrated success in phlebotomy in youth and adults with obesity and who will work at least 1-2 shifts/month.
  • Study visits occur Fridays and Saturdays (occasional Sundays) during the school year to limit school absences. In the summer and holiday breaks visits are held on weekdays as well.

Working Environment

  • Ability to work both independently within a complex structured team.

  • Use lab equipment such as tourniquet, needles, blood collection tubes, gauze or bandages, alcohol pads, glucometer
  • Use office equipment including a desktop computer
  • Possible work with potentially hazardous agents or physical hazards
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work

  • Works from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments
  • Ability to lift and transport 15 lbs.
  • Able to exercise judgment within generally defined practices & policies to determine appropriate action

The Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation is looking for experienced phlebotomists to perform Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests in the Translational Research Center on the ASU Downtown campus at 5th street and Roosevelt. This entails administering phlebotomy for youth participants with obesity (10 -16 years of age) and their family members at fasting and 120 minutes after drinking a glucola drink.
