Purpose of Position:

Under general supervision of coordinating manager and supervisor(s) performs Network (Jacobi/ North Central Bronx)

Phlebotomy procedures.

Provides all blood drawing services to patient and clients (newborn, pediatrics, adolescents, adult and geriatric ages) for specimen testing and diagnostic evaluation.

Cleans laboratory equipment and performs clerical duties in support of laboratory phlebotomy activities.

Responsibilities:

• Document patient collection of blood samples in LIS (Laboratory information System).
• Prior to inpatient blood collection, labels are to be printed and put on the tube when at the bedside of the patient.
• The venipuncture techniques are used for drawing blood on children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.
• Perform heel sticks for newborn and neonatal using proper technique as described in the Phlebotomy Procedure manual.
• Provide instruction for patients as required prior to the venipuncture of blood samples).
• Follows procedures on positive identification of patient, two forms of identification, and perform the related activities in compliance with patient safety i.e. gloves should be discarded, tourniquets and vacutainers after each blood drawn.

1. Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma; or,
2. Satisfactory combination and education, training and experience; and,
3. Successful completion of the prescribed training program for Phlebotomist.
