Job Description

As a Pharmacy Patient Assistance Program Specialist, you will test claims functionality in the Pharmacy software system for specific medications to determine third party coverage. To help achieve our mission, you will enhance customer satisfaction and complaint resolution. Your ability to improve patient service experience and Johns Hopkins (JH) Retail Pharmacy revenue through the provision of medication assistance (e.g. PAP, foundation programs, co-pay assistance programs, philanthropic funds) programs throughout JH clinics by creating and establishing relationships to promote the JH Pharmacies is of vital importance. Participation in committees within the Johns Hopkins Home Care Group is required. Documenting action taken and running weekly reports, while keeping open lines of communication by facilitating between Pharmacies, other healthcare professionals, patients, manufacturers and third party payers, is expected.

Job Responsibilities


  • Actively assists with new projects in addition to daily responsibilities.
  • Utilizes the knowledge of others to complete assigned tasks and completes requested tasks in the timeframe allotted by management.
  • Obtains referral documentation from social work or various providers/clinics.
  • Changes third party bill codes appropriately based upon PAP programs and medications provided by PAP programs.
  • Contacts the specialty mail order Pharmacy promptly for enrollment details and turnaround times between prescription intake to delivery.
  • Update envisions Rx with any new medications/forms that need to be uploaded or changed in the system. Routinely reports monies saved for patients through various medication assistance programs.
  • Obtains appropriate phone/fax numbers for providers and patients.
  • Processes PAP (Patient Assistance Program) requests promptly and efficiently per policy with documentation in all appropriate systems such as Epic, PAP Tracker and ERX.
  • Develops effective working relations with internal and external entities. Initiates service recovery at the pharmacy level by referring to management when warranted.
  • Participates in committees as needed with manager approval.
  • Prescreens payment sources to identify payers who do not recognize JH Retail Pharmacies as a preferred specialty Pharmacy provider.
  • Ensures that all necessary documents are received and completed appropriately.
  • Receives and stores PAP medications within the outpatient Pharmacy.
  • Maintains correct documentation of PAP inventory from the pharmaceutical manufacturers.
  • Collaborates with clinic staff and providers to streamline patient referral to JH Retail Pharmacies or other appropriate care providers.
  • Utilizes resources such as email and telephone to communicate pertinent patient information to clinic staff.
  • Runs weekly reports to monitor PAP applications still pending/not resolved and takes appropriate action.
  • Communicates concerns/barriers to progress with appropriate staff/management.
  • Abides by all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains PAP medications within the pharmacy area by removing outdated and unusable medications according to "Removal of Unusable Medications from Active Inventory" policy.
  • Works collaboratively with clinic staff to educate and inform patients about JH Retail Pharmacy services and medication assistance options.
  • Effectively determines patients' ability to utilize Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) Pharmacy services and routes prescriptions to appropriate JHM pharmacies when appropriate. In the event a patient is unable to utilize JHM services, obtains patient permission to move forward and release their information to the specialty mail order Pharmacy.
  • Enters test prescriptions into Pharmacy software systems (i.e. drug name and appropriate NDC number dose, quantity, day supply to check for coverage).
  • Provides exemplary customer service to patients being served at JH Health Clinics.
  • Communicates with outpatient Pharmacies, healthcare providers and management when away from work area, via email, out of office assistance, messaging in PING and notes on fax machines.
  • Assists with training staff when warranted.
  • Receives requests from providers and processes them in a timely manner.
  • Reviews high cost medications prescribed for outpatients across Johns Hopkins (JH) Pharmacies, conducts patient insurance and financial review and facilitates adherence to medications by ensuring that patients apply to the appropriate medication assistance program(s) and receive their prescribed medications in a timely manner.
  • Researches patient prescription information using hospital medical record systems.



Requirements For Consideration

Minimum Education - High School or GED

Schedule - Fulltime M-F Variable Shifts

Experience - Required to have knowledge of pharmacy work, routines, materials and mathematics

Licensing - Registration with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy Upon Hire
