Job Description

Duties

As a Pest Control Worker, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain records of daily work activities.
  • Interpret pesticide/herbicide labels and material safety data sheets for proper use of chemicals.
  • Maintain records of animals caught or destroyed, including sex, approximate age, and weight.
  • Use All-terrain (ATV), Off-Road (ORV) and Utility-Task (UTV) Vehicles following approved safety procedures.
  • Use knowledge of wilderness, tracks and spoor to track animals.
  • Use fence pullers, chain saws, post hole diggers and drivers, sledge hammers, fence pliers, cable and wire cutters to maintain fences.
  • Lead others in biological surveys and collect accurate data following established protocols.
  • Use mix ratios and proper disposal procedures to apply pesticides or other toxic/hazardous materials.
  • Maintain records of herbicide application, including volumes of pesticides used, target species and acreage treated.
  • Use a backpack or vehicle-mounted sprayer to apply non-restricted herbicides for control of alien or invasive plants
  • Lead crews in the construction and/or repair of fences or other structures to contain or exclude animals from property.
  • Hunt feral or alien animals with firearms, traps, and bait.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements.

The screen out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Pest Control Worker without more than normal supervision.

  • Ability to apply and instruct crews in the techniques involved in applying pesticides to control invasive plant species using a variety of application equipment, including backpack or hand sprayers, OHV mounted sprayers, and power sprayers.
  • Ability to apply pest control methods and guide crews in shooting, snaring, or trapping destructive, depredating, or predatory animals, such as feral pigs.
  • Knowledge of effective control methods for feral swine in order to effectively eradicate swine and protect refuge resources.
  • Ability to collect and record accurate biological data according to set protocols to effectively monitor refuge resources.
  • Skill in the use of basic hand tools, i.e., shovels, picks, hammers, pliers, saws, trowels, paint brushes, etc., to maintain or repair structures.
  • Knowledge of proper use, storage, disposal and spill response methods for pesticides.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
