National Forest Foundation (NFF) is pleased to offer a regular, full-time position that will be an integral part of the People and Culture (HR) team at the NFF, supporting all people, culture, and talent-related growth efforts for the organization.


About the NFF: The NFF works with communities and organizations to conserve and enhance the watersheds, wildlife habitat, wild places, and recreational opportunities across our 193-million-acre National Forest System. Position Function. The People and Culture Specialist will report to the Chief People Officer and work closely with all departments to support the People and Culture function at NFF. This is a new position that requires strong attention to detail, along with a commitment to cross-cultural and cross-functional relationship building. The ideal candidate has a minimum of two years of experience in human resources with work in diversity, equity, and inclusion, ideally within a nonprofit setting, and experience working in a remote environment, ideally with HR familiarity in a multi-state setting. The successful candidate has a fastidious focus on meeting the needs of staff, a zeal for technology and online applications that streamline human resource functions, a sense of humor, and the ability to roll up their sleeves to get the job done.


Position Duties and Responsibilities. The People and Culture Specialist is responsible for:


  • Collaborates with other team members to support the initiation of the onboarding process at NFF.
  • Assists in the review of current practices and policies, assessing and analyzing the extent to which they support or hinder diversity goals of NFF.
  • Supports HR systems and employees in the use of HR technology.
  • Processes required documents through payroll and insurance providers to ensure accurate record keeping and proper deductions.
  • Assists with the preparation of the performance review and leave processes.
  • Completes and ensures I-9 compliance and administers the E-Verify process for all new hires.
  • Monitors compliance requirements at the federal and state level and highlights any potential issues or legislative changes that may impact operations.
  • Ensures mandatory training courses are updated and completed for new hires and existing staff.
  • Administers employee health and welfare plans, including enrollments, changes, and terminations.
  • Supports benefits open enrollment in partnership with the Chief People Officer and broker.
  • Maintains knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.
  • Researches, develops, recommends, and presents creative strategies to foster the NFF’s diversity goals.
  • Responds to the needs of NFF staff through multiple channels to include Teams, email, phone, and text messages.
  • Files employee documents in their secure location and ensures file integrity is maintained.
  • Assists with HR related audit requests and reporting.
  • Collects and analyzes statistical data to evaluate NFF’s population in accordance with diversity standards and goals.
  • Other people and culture-related duties, as assigned.
  • Assists and prepares correspondence as requested.
  • Prepares new employee personnel files. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records in the HRIS.
  • Prepare employee separations documentation, communicate to Payroll and IT, and conduct exit interviews. Terminate in all applicable vendors not limited to benefits.
  • Manages the handbook and other related policy updates as necessary in partnership with the Chief People Officer.


Education and Qualifications. NFF expects the People and Culture Specialist to possess the following educational and experiential qualifications:


  • Experience and competency in HR information systems required.
  • Nonprofit human resources experience preferred.
  • Commitment to the mission of the NFF and familiarity with the U.S. Forest Service purpose and National Forest lands management is a plus.
  • Professional HR Certification (PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SCP) preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years’ experience in Human Resources.
  • BS/BA degree preferred, but not required.
  • Remote work experience, ideally on a national, multi-state scale (preferred or required?)


Abilities and Skills. NFF expects the People and Culture Specialist to possess the following abilities and skills:


  • Ability to represent the NFF in a clear and professional manner through excellent written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent time management and ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • The willingness and desire to work independently, as well as collaboratively, and to take on additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Knowledge and comfort with all Microsoft Office applications (Office 365, Teams, SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Demonstrate a deep knowledge and familiarity with human resources best practices and a lens for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging best practices.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and working in a diverse and multi-cultural work environment.
  • Strong business acumen skills, from employment law and fundamental principles to creating fair and equitable people and culture processes.
  • Ability to manage and utilize cloud based human resources information systems.
  • Strong customer service and solutions orientation, in addition to attention to detail.
  • Continuous learner who regularly stays up-to-date on common benefit practices, human resource compliance requirements, as well as emerging technology and related human resource practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, promoting mutual accountability and inspiring trust and confidence from NFF colleagues.


Location and Work Environment: The preferred position location is Missoula, Montana. NFF may consider other locations in the United States with reliable internet and phone access. This position is sedentary in nature and may require extensive time in front of a computer. May be asked to travel a few times a year, based on needs of the organization.


Compensation: The NFF offers competitive compensation commensurate with candidate skills, experience, and location. Total rewards at NFF, beyond salary, include generous paid time off, employer contributions to health savings accounts, matching funds for retirement, and more. NFF has recently (August 2022) implemented a new compensation program with grade levels as part of our commitment to transparency. The salary range for this position will be in the $64,100 to $86,500 range and may be eligible for locality adjustment. Please note that the indicated salary range describes the full range for an incumbent in this position. Most new staff generally start at the beginning of the range percentile to ensure internal salary equity.
