Job Description

General duty law enforcement work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Employees in this class patrol county areas in patrol cars in the enforcement of law and in securing compliance with traffic regulations, escorting prisoners, undertaking routine investigations, serving legal instruments, and executing court orders. Work involves an element of personal danger; employees must act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgement in meeting emergency situations. Assignments and general/special orders are received from superior officers who review work methods and results through reports, inspections, and discussions.

Lateral hiring wage will be considered dependent upon experience and qualifications.

Employees in this position have access to a modern training facility and indoor gun range. Receive an annual uniform allowance, are eligible to receive an annual fitness incentive ranging from $643.34 - $2,311.20 and a take home squad.

Our focus is to provide extensive training, support and opportunities to our deputies allowing them to expand their skill sets and move into specialty assignments (K9, Emergency Response Unit (ERU), Dive Team, Financial Crimes and Welfare Fraud, Drug Task Force (DTF), School Liaison Officer).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patrol Sherburne County to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime.
Answer a wide variety of calls and complaints involving felonies, misdemeanors, domestic disturbances, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, drownings, animal control, area searches and other incidents.
Administer first aid, conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, obtain witnesses, make arrests and transport prisoners.
Enforce traffic laws and cite traffic violations.
Serve warrants, summonses, and other processes on persons; execute court orders; conduct routine investigations and assist in complex investigations.
Assist fire departments and other law enforcement agencies in responding in emergency response and natural disasters.
Testify in court; participate in the preparation of cases for court.
Prepare all necessary reports.
Escort prisoners and others to and from court, jail, other jurisdictions, or rehabilitative institutions.
Perform other relevant duties as apparent or directed.
Develop and maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships.
Regular and reliable attendance according to the department’s work schedule.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Thorough knowledge of federal, state, county and local laws and ordinances.
Thorough knowledge of criminal justice system, court procedures and applicable equipment.
Ability to quickly evaluate situations and respond to non-routine emergency situations in an appropriate manner.
Knowledge of public service activities and county policies.
Ability to recognize and communicate with persons under adverse situations.
Knowledge of Sherburne County geography, streets and roads.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma
Valid Minnesota Driver’s License
Must meet academic and skills course requirements for state licensure which require successful completion of a two-year college program in law enforcement and an eight-week skills course; or equivalent training/experience recognized by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).
Must be Licensed or eligible to be licensed by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (POST) by September 1, 2023.

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Must work rotating shifts including nights, holidays and weekends. Work may be performed in all weather conditions outdoors.

Must meet physical requirements as established as part of the recruitment and selection process to perform essential job functions.

Sherburne County offers an exceptional benefit plan including Paid Time Off starting at 21 days per year and increasing to a maximum of 33 days per year; 11 paid holidays; benefit plan including health, life, dental, vision, short-term, and long-term disability, and long-term care insurance; medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts (Section 125 Plan); deferred compensation plan and Public Employees Retirement (PERA). Some benefits are pro-rated for employees working more than 30 but less than 40 hours per week. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week do not receive benefits.
