Under the supervision of a Nurse, the Patient Care Tech is cross-trained in the role of Unit Secretary and Nursing Assistant. Based on the needs of the department, responsibilities are a combination of providing direct patient care and technical assistance to the nurse and performing a variety of computer, clerical, scheduling, and supply functions as necessary for the operation of the unit. Compliance with rules and regulations of all applicable federal, state and local laws as well as PMHC policies is a condition of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Incumbent must have the skills, ability and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

1. Assists in the collection of assessment data such as vital signs and intake/output. Subjective and objective data are reported to nursing staff. 2. Provides care that meets the patient’s activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, repositioning, and ambulating for patients of all ages. 3. Collects laboratory specimens. 4. Creates and maintains a comfortable and safe environment for patients, families, and visitors. 5. Organizes and maintains the patient record. 6. Notifies personnel as delegated by nursing staff/charge nurse. 7. Transcribes physician orders for review and approval by LPN or RN. 8. Answers telephones and call lights and refers them to the appropriate personnel. 9. Transports patients and/or families from the unit. 10. Maintains clerical and patient supplies on the unit. 11. If the Patient Care Tech has completed a Basic EKG course, he/she may be responsible for notifying nursing personnel of changes on Telemetry. 12. If working in Same Day Services, completes patient’s scrub prep for surgery. 13. Maintains patient and employee confidentiality at all times.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and the risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The level of risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens is Classification I, as outlined in the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

1. High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) 2. Current certification as a Nursing Assistant.

COMPETENCIES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

1. Current BLS certification. 2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
