Primary duties include:

  • Assisting the graduate student before or after class in meeting with the instructor to get clarification of material and information, as needed.
  • Creating verbal descriptions of classroom materials or groupwork activities that are primarily visual or graphical in nature. This includes reading aloud and visually describing anything that is written on the board or presented on overheads, handouts, PowerPoint slides, or any other visual aids.
  • Reading text, classroom materials, or groupwork activities presented during class periods. The graduate student can guide the process of moving through printed material by giving directions (e.g., reading rate and tone, “read,” “stop,” “repeat,” “skip,” “skim,” etc.).
  • Providing non-ambiguous verbal descriptions of video content required for classroom learning. The graduate student may request to pause the video and ask questions about the video images as it is communicated to him and he perceives it.

This person will work closely with the graduate student consumer, his classmates, and instructor. The candidate will be trained by the graduate student in order to follow directions given by him to: perform reading and description tasks; move through classroom material; and provide necessary information. This person is not responsible for individually teaching the material or finding answers when reading an assignment. Understanding of business administration principles is preferred. Previous experience in working with people who are blind is preferred but not required. Training on accessibility guidelines will be provided; prior knowledge is not required.

This is a part-time, non-exempt position, with approximately 12 hours per weekend for up to two years.
